Why is it when you play a dvd on a regular television the explosions and music are way way loud and then the speech is too quiet to hear and whispers are worse, so you end up having to hold the remote pressing up and down on the volulme keys. Is there a way to fix this???

I used to have the 5.1 surround stuff with yamaha equipment Energy speakers Velodyne sub and all that hi end mumbo jumbo.
Still the speech was hard to hear and the explosions and music were way to loud. For me it was annoying personally. Is there something out there that makes the sound even no matter what movie you watch or dvd you play?

Its just as bad as a car commercial after a show, the volume pumps up like 10 levels until the commercial is over.

Any device that can make the sound even??? Right now I just have normal tv speakers and a panasonic plasma.

Thanks

some sytems have a "dialog enhancer" which addreses this very problem. another feature that is sometimes present in recievers is a stereo "wide / narrow or normal" setting. if you keep your speakers spaced farther apart and utilize the "wide" setting it will help. becasue the dialog will be only at the center (typically closer to the listening area) and effect will be farther away ( front right left and rear). Anther common error i see people do is place the rear effect channels right abouve or directly behind them, again bringing the effects closer and therefor louder. The other issue is a pour accoutic room, allowing for lots of reflective sound. A properly prepared room goes along way to making a system sound better.

That is a GOOD, and I mean GOOD question. I have also noticed this many times while looking at TVs at home theater stores. My guess is that when you are hearing the sound through the TV only, all the sound channels are being "mixed down" into (in these cases) two channels. With that going on, some things are getting "crammed together" and resulting in bad level matches. I don't know the real truth ,but that is my guess.

Just thinking outside the box here, you could install a limiter which would attenuate the explosions and music while not affecting the whispering, so you could keep the level high.

Maybe some pre-amps have this ability built in like the other guy was saying as far as dynamic range...

Dolby is coming out with a new coding that will level out your commercials and programming and will be available on home theater receivers later this year. finally!
Most TVs have a setting in the audio to level out the sound. Check in the audio menu of your TV and make sure it's turned on.

The dynamic range is on max. There should be a menu button for dynamic range on the DVD player. Turn it down or to min.setting then the music, effects and dialog should all sound the same in vol. (approx.).Se if this helps .Good luck,Rob.

This is a theater compensation thing. My DVD player had a cinema button that would up the center channel and lower the rest. It still was not enough for me. In my home theater, I have my center speaker up at least 5dbs.
