I am 28 years old. I have a clean driving record. I got a speeding ticket for 0-10 miles over. Seat belt on. Will my insurance company know I got this ticket and will they raise my rates. We have Geico. Should I take the defensive driving class and keep this ticket off my record? Or should I just pay it and go on?

Take the class... get it off your record and the insurance company wont know about it UNLESS you don't go to the class and then when its time for renewal and they run your motor vehicle reports and then it might increase your rate.

Take the driving school. The insurance company won't be notified if you complete the class. Plus they give you a card and if you get pulled over again, just show them the card. But don't expect to go 50 mph over the speed limit and have that card count for anything. At least in KY, it works that way.

A couple we know (also insured by GEICO) each got a speeding ticket about a year ago. They did not notify GEICO, and GEICO didn't find out yet. So their insurance rates have not been increased yet. They are just waiting to see if GEICO catches it.

It may or may not, but if it does it shouldn't go up too much. At least you were not involved in an accident and have a clean record. Talk to your agent and see if taking an accredited safe-driving course would help. The agent will have a list or you can get one from your state DMV. It varies from company to company and state to state. But it's worth spending the couple of hours to get your rate down if you're tight on cash. You can even get your rate down by taking one of these classes even if you have a clean record.

Take the defensive driving class. It's easy, and cheaper than an insurance hike. If you don't, then most likely your rates will increase.

I'd tell the insurance company. You don't want them to find out first.

your rate will most likely go up on your policy renewal, but you can probably get a discount for taking defensive driving.
