What year, what engine? Up until Jeep got the idea to start using a V6 engine instead of the old inline 6 engine they were great on gas, now they are gas guzzler's just like all the other carry all vehicles are. As for the V8 engines avoid them as they aren't easy on gas either. So if you want a cherokee get an older one.

It's a little below average for it's size class but you have to consider that the things that are in it's size class are things like the honda crv, toyota rav4, which are mostly all four cylinder vechicles so of course it won't get as good since the Jeep is an inline six cylinder. It will get about 17 in city driving and 20 on the highway.

There are many variables to answer this question intelligently .
How are you going to use it? Highway or around town? What are you going to do with it? Four wheel drive or two wheel? What axle ratio and tire size.
19-20 MPG on highway at normal spees is about normal. 14-15 around town would also be about normal. Have two right now std and Grand with 4 liter engine.
Good Luck.

I get a consistent 20 1/2 mpg @ 80 mph in mine. Its not the kind of mileage you get in a Jetta, but it wont break the bank either.

I prefer crackers and a cold beer!

Seriously they can be very good with gas (when they are broke down and yu are drinking the beer and eating the crackers). They are not very fuel eficient cars either.
