Religions have members of varying levels of intelligence so it is obvious that being a believer has nothing to do with intelligence and instead everything to do with a persons mentality. It takes a certain mentality to belong to a certain religion, it even takes a certain mentality to be a Atheist.

To be a beleiver or to be a Atheist has nothing at all to do with intelligence but instead a particular mentality yet Atheists constantly insult the intelligence of others by telling them they are stupid or delusional, if you all were really that smart you would know this wouldn't you?

Ah wanna talk about my Avatar YDoncha, it's like this the Atheists stole my Avatar so I stole one of theirs, if they want to give me mine back, I'll be more than happy to give theirs back. And stop talking so stupidly and acting real smart at the same time it is very unbecoming. And you don't know who I am or if I have a religion or not, you know nothing.

SOME think they are smarter than we are but if one is truly smart then one need not point out "Oh! look at me I have a different thought than you do so I am smart and you are dumb!" In reality they don't understand. Notice that I said SOME not ALL, just the ones who find it necessary to come to this site and call us retards and stupid and dumb. We know we aren't those things. They are just making themselves look less intelligent than they should be.Or else they would just leave us alone.

I never claimed that atheists are smart, only that a statistical correlation links high intelligence and education to atheistic and agnostic philosophies. Look at Ken Jennings from Jeopardy last year. He is a practicing Mormon.

I agree with you on the mentality bit. Some of the smartest folks in the world can be religious. I've met some myself. But all lack the reasoning that science imparts, that "faith" does not prove or validate any kind of personal belief and that such belief is utterly meaningless in a universe that can be understood using the scientific method to invalidate spurious claims.

I never said I was smart, either. I just think that I'm lucky enough to choose reality over the comforts of self-delusion. I could be proved wrong any day. But I'm open to evidence, unlike many others on our planet.

I know allot of very smart Christians.

I also know allot of very smart Chefs. Some people that aren't chefs are not aware that adding salt to a cake helps the flavor. Not knowing this doesn't make them stupid, just uninformed.

The same applies to Christians.

I truly believe that if Christians would take the time to honestly look at all the evidence that we have for evolution, they would come to the conclusion that the story of creation in the bible cannot be real. Most however choose to ignore the evidence or try to look at it in a way that fits in with their current belief.

Being an Atheist doesn't make you smart, just informed.

Yes, I am always chagrined by my fellow atheists when they start denigrating the intelligence of those who don't have the same beliefs or lack of beliefs as they do.

There are some incredibly intelligent religious people out there. Stereotyping religious people as otherwise is insulting both to the religious people, and to atheists as well (because why are you arguing with them if you're so much smarter than them). It is the same kind of sophistry and willful ignorance that atheists usually accuse fundamentalists of.

In my own personal case, I am often astounded when people who are obviously incredibly intelligent believe things that I consider utterly, indefensibly absurd.

It is trying to understand that dichotomy that brings me to fora such as this. It also applies to political discussions.

they are inevitably smarter in maximum situations. They see certainty lots greater objectively than theists and don't attempt to distort issues to assist ill-based ideals and forget related to the numerous info that solid doubt upon religions. Religions tend to cripple one's logical ability and cut back off his ability ot learn all info, which contains those that disprove one's faith.

Hello Troll. Whatsa the problem - cant come up with your own catchy avatar, so you must steal that of an Atheists??

And, if intelligence has nothing to do with religiosity, then why are there IQ studies that show that those with low religiosity are highly intelligent, while those with high religiosity are low in intelligence?

Its okay - you can look in the dictionary to figure out what Im saying...I wait for a response...

Just because someone has a certain mentality for a ideology or religion doesnt automatically make that religion correct. That religion needs to proded and poked for paradoxes or ethical fallacies-which by the way are pretty easy to find in religions.

I do agree in the point that beliefs have nothing to do with intelligence, but I am an atheist and I don't tell everybody that I am smart you should direct your comment to the kind of persons that do that not to all the atheist's.

For a nonbeliever, to be smart, intelligent , well read and informed is the ideal condition of their individuality.
the difference is in the social application of ones gift.
Most atheist tent to be responsible human beings.
on the other hand, there are criminals that are extremely smart, but we know what are their goals in life.
I will not even try to characterize religious people. or how smart they are.
but obviously their principles are based on dogmas of faith. not on science.. so most of the time is difficult to have a sincere debate.

this is my thinking....

i hate the word Atheist, - it denotes that there is defentely some form of 'higher being' and everyone that does not think so is wrong !!

religion causes wars, arguements and violence

is this good ? NO !!

so how could a great god sit back and watch the extreme violence in their name ??

if one existed, then we would be the equivelent to ants on a hill, and god would be the child with a magnifying glass trying to burn us

i dont want to know a god like that

also, - no god, no religion and the word Atheist disapears into the mist
