If it's bunk or a "fairy tale" as they say, why go on so hard about it?

We don't thumb our noses at the deity, because none likely exists.
We thumb our noses at the doctrines that people have created to explain and codify this, and eventually force onto others. Some religions call for intolerance, suppression of reason/science, and gross human rights abuse, as history has demonstrated and continues to do so.
It's ethically superior to debate religion as opposed to calling it "off limits," but I would also argue that atheists have a moral right to debate, or at least to uphold the secular ideals that allow for freedom of self-determination, instead of theocratic tyranny.
It's far less arrogant and dishonest to be a playful atheist then to threaten someone who doesn't believe the same philosophy that you do with eternal hellfire, don't you think?
How can you stand still when Catholics oppose contraception and some priests tell Africans with HIV that condoms cause AIDS? 40 million people have a near death sentence, and contraception could contain the spread.
How can you stand still when Christians oppose stem cell research that could benefit millions of people?
How can you stand still when governments like Iran suppress freedom of speech or religion in the name of a book that was written centuries before science improved our understanding of human nature and the Enlightenment encouraged free thinking?
We need to debate on these things, I think.

Real atheists don't "supposedly" disbelieve in your fictious God, we actually don't believe that any real gods ever existed, your's included. We're not thumbing our noses at your imaginary deity, we're thumbing our noses at all theists like you, for all the suffering and hatred you bring to the human community.

Who is thumbing noses at God?
God does not exist.
It is you we are thumbing noses at.
Dangerously deluded Christians do exist, and they are causing serious damage to other people's lives.

I don't thumb my nose at him cause he doesn't exist. I prefer to think for myself and believe in myself. I don't need a religion to give me a crutch and make me feel better about myself and give me reason for being. I don't need a god to put fear of hell in front of me if I don't follow a religious belief. I just don't understand how so many people can be totally blind and ignorant to what is around them.

I thumb my nose at theists, not god. I don't even have a problem with many theists. Many people are content to keep their beliefs to themselves and not attempt to legislate them or convert others. I still think these people are wrong but I would not thumb my nose at them.
On the other hand, for those who deserve it, my thumb and nose stand ready to do my civic duty.

We arent thumbing our noses at him. We frustrated by his mindless followers who feel the need to push their unwanted beliefs on us. As though if we hadnt accepted him before your words alone would suddenly make me believe. We want to live in peace without constantly having to defend our choice of religion or lack their of.

I know. They ridicule us for "believing in someone you can't "see"", but then answered one of my questions several weeks ago that the existence of aliens, for which there is no "proof" of existence, as being more "plausible" than God's existence. That's "logic" I guess. Go figure.

There is a distinction between a thing and the idea of a thing.
I do not believe in werewolves, but I can still entertain the idea of them. I can stand in a dark room and look around and dare any werewolves around me to show their cowardly faces. I don't believe, but the entertainment of the idea is emotionally fun.
It's not your deity I'm thumbing my nose at -- there's no such being. I'm thumbing my nose at your idea of one.
