Allergic reactions to dogs and cats occur when dry flakes of skin are shed from the animal's body and come in contact with human skin, or through the nose or throat. All animals, including humans, shed skin. But on such a microscopic scale, it's near impossible to see.

If you can convince your father, he can get allergy shots that will cure him of everything he's allergic to for up to 12 years. Basically, the allergist injects low doses of everything he's tested positive for until his body slowly grows a natural immunity to them.

I had the shots done myself 8 years ago and within a year of starting them, my chronic sinus infections, bad breath and phlem infested throat disappeared!

Well, I know that the allergy is usually the hair falling out of the cat that affects people allergic to cats. You should talk to a doctor or send your dad to his doctor. It depends how much you really want the cat. I'm allergic to cats but I use a Nasonex that basically demolishes the allergy until night when I take it again.

Your dad can go see an allergist for tests.

If he is allergic but you get the cat anyway, make sure to vacuum and dust with a damp cloth a lot. And groom your kitty often so there will be less loose fur floating around.

Good luck!

People are allergic to the dander in the fur. The only way to tell is to get skin testing at an allergist.
