Brigham Young said, while speaking 'in the name of Jesus Christ':

“The ONLY MEN WHO BECOME GODS, even the Sons of God, are those WHO ENTER INTO POLYGAMY.”(Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, page 269)

(emphasis added)

That was a commandment of God during those times. A later revelation was made that we no longer need to enter into polygamy. Our Church now sees it as a sin of God. This is the amazing thing of our church, we have modern prophets that receive revelations. Perhaps one reason for polygamy was required by God was so that the Gospel could be spread, I can not say for certain why it was requested but in the same talk prophet Young said:

" It may be hard for many, and especially for the ladies, yet it is no harder for them than it is for the gentlemen."

When people think of having multiple wives they do not consider exactly how hard of a lifestyle it is. I would imagine such a lifestyle would be extremely demanding on lower class people as well as middle classed people. I could hardly see this as a joy ride. I would never wish to have more than one wife.. As far as I see it, my wife is just enough and indeed more than enough at times:)

Thanks for the question.

Is this a way for you to get more sex? Pretty lame...

*deep sigh*
Brigham Young was referring to the men who had already been asked to enter into the covenant of Plural Marriage. And as you have no doubt been told many times, not everyone participated. A man had to have financial means to support several families. A man had to be of a certain moral character (ask Brigham himself about this, if you want to know more.) And his wife had to agree.
Ta-da!

Well, I've wondered about that, especially since Paul's letter to Timothy specifically states that a Bishop or Deacon can only have one wife. How would a Mormon reconcile the two?

Because God said we can still be His heirs. We HAVE had other prophets since Brigham Young. God speaks to THOSE prophets, and what GOD says to THOSE prophets is what we believe.

If it is not in our scriptures, then it is not official doctrine, belief, policy or practice.

I don't know. Why don't you ask God? He would know. He hasn't told us how it will all work out.
