I do not have all of the text, but from this snippet it looks as though Kimball is saying that the men who followed the commandments of God in that time (1800s) looked as though Heavenly Father had blessed them with good health.
I am not sure why he would say "I do not know what we should do if we had only one wife a piece". I am not sure in what context he is speaking. It could mean the same as "I do not know what we would do if we had to break a commandment of God".

The modern church does not advocate this, in fact it takes steps to ensure this doesn't happen.
Mormons have very moral beliefs, if a bit fundamental.
I respect them the most of all Christians.
