Most pediatric dentists have hospital privileges as a pediatric dentist. Most hospitals would not grant that privilege with specialty certification.

They have to take an extra course to become a pedodontist.
A regular dentist can work on children, but they can't refer to themselves as pedodontist specialists if they are not.

THE EXTRA TRAINING OFFERS THIS DENTIST MORE EXPOSURE TO DIFFERENT PEDIATRIC CASES. IT WOULD BE ILLEGAL TO ADVERTISE THAT ONE IS A PEDIATRIC SPECIALIST IF HE DOES NOT HAVE THE EDUCATIONAL CREDENTIALS TO BACK UP THE CLAIM.
IF THE GENERAL DENTIST RUNS INTO A TOUGH CASE HE SHOULD ALWAYS REFER OUT TO A SPECIALIST.
