I bought this cheddar cheese at a little specialty store and not only is it not orange, but it's got a crumbly texture, not nice and smooth like I'm used to! It tasted really strong too! Did it go bad? Should I just stick with kraft cheese?

If you're used to Kraft, then what you're probably looking at is real cheddar.

No cheese is naturally orange...all of that is just added food coloring. Also, a good cheddar will be quite dry, and therefore fairly crumbly, and it most definitely will be very strongly flavored (YUM!!!).

If you don't like that kind of thing, you probably should stop "wasting" your money on the expensive stuff, and stick with the lesser quality stuff that's available at the grocery store. It will be a better use of your money to at least get something you're going to eat.

Golly, I wish I was nearby, so I could swap the stuff in my fridge for what you've got...it sounds wonderful!!

You may have bought white cheddar or from a mom and pop place that just doesn't add the coloring (cheddar is not naturally orange). If you don't like it....don't eat it. I always stick to that rule- If you don't see mold and you just bought it...probably still good. Also just call the store you bought it from.

no theis could actually be the wrong cheese, it sounds some a havarti, goat, or feta. If there is no mold (unless it is bleu) the cheese is fine, i think you just got the wrong cheese, perhaps it was wrongly labeled. The cheddar also can white, theres both white and yellow cheddar.

As a Wisconsinite, it sounds like you have REAL cheddar cheese, and if it's crumbling...it's not your typical processed cheese. As with the post above, not moldy, its good. If it is moldy, cut off the mold....it is good under the moldy layer...really!
