Jesus said that there is only one way to the Father in heaven, and that is by Him. This life is very short compared to all of eternity. There is more to "religion" than just being a good person, on this earth. There is the coming judgment to consider. I believe there is only one way to God...and that's what I answer when people ask me questions like this. I also respect the right of each person to make their own decision whether to believe Jesus.....or not.

decent question. But religion also causes harmful beliefs. So the ideal would be to get rid of the bad (usually taking commands in old literature too literally) while keeping the good (usually the spiritual, which can be obtained from any number of sources), and if you do that, there is reason to disregard organized religion as long as you can replace it with something else. Religious people don't seem to get that it's possible to be good without religion.

Because many fell that those same religious beliefs accompany ignorace. Ignorance can be annoying in the least, and dangerous in excess.
Religion can come with beliefs that DON'T contribute to being a better person. So while "help the poor" and "be kind" are great concepts along with religion, ideas like, "gays are sinners" and "we should teach Genesis Creation to everyone!" can be harmful.

Because its just like food. Generally, food makes us better. But, there are some components in food that is dangerous to us--like preservatives, traces of harmful chemicals, etc.
It is the same as religion. For example, there are many good muslims around; many good fundies around. But, some of what they teach--such as Jihad, hellfire, etc is harmful. Or, at the least false.
Or take this illustration. If your child is fund of Mcdonalds--which in a way could provide protein and fat for the growing child--would you really recommend that your child always eat Mcdonald's food.

Simple, if it is a lie it is not true and we should be honest with them and say so. Drug rehabilitation, job corps, team sports, and counseling have all been known to make people become better. But that doesn't mean football should become a young boy's religion, right?

I think what you're saying is right in some cases. There are people who need the restraints of organized religion in order to discipline themselves to 'be good'. Fear is a great incentive for those who think they should be afraid of divine retribution. If you take their religion away from them, they might do themselves and others a lot of harm.

It's a myth that religion causes someone to be a better person. If someone is a good person, they just are. There's no reason to attach a anthropomorphic personification to it. It's sad that people think they have to.

my thinking exactly - and what i have come to is that it seems different religions work to make different people into good happy people. For some people christianity is transformative, for others it just gets in the way and the same with other religions.
So i have come to believe that we need all of them to answer the needs of all the different people we have in the world.

You can't tell anyone their religion is not true because nobody really knows. You don't really know until you die. You just believe what you believe. I believe in Jesus Christ being the Son of God and that I am going to Heaven when I die, and lots of people tell my I'm wrong and stupid for believing that, but can they prove I'm wrong? No, they just BELIEVE I'm wrong. Can I prove I'm right? No, but I BELIEVE I am.
