Does religion and science always have to be on opposing sides? In a very complex universe why can't there be multiple explanations for how the world behaves that are different but true in their own way?

I'm just interested in how people feel about this....

You won't find too many astrophysicists in church because they know first hand the myths in the bible are irreconcilable with discovery. Go to the Hubble website and examine the true age of the universe, how the universe is expanding, a view from billions of years ago. Truth be told, the cosmos are far more fascinating than any myth and new answers come up daily.

ya know what? You are on the right track. Religion is all about science and so is God. God uses science and the natural world to cause every calamity he uses to punish and reward mankind. That is why he never does anything on the spur of the moment. It takes time to set up plagues and fire storms. If you look behind all of Gods punishments and miracles you will find a perfectly good scientific explanation for them. This is because God uses the natural world and all the branches of science to bring them forth and complete his tasks. God created science and uses it to fulfill his destinies and promises.

To be religious and respect science does not make sense, but to know about science and at the same time respecting religion makes sense.
I am an atheist, but I still respect those that do not share the same beliefs as I do.

Religion and science work on opposite principles. Religion works on faith and tradition, and science works on experimentation and evidence. They do not have to be opponents, but they you can't put them in the same pen together and expect them to play nice. They should be separate. Science can explain the natural world, religion can speculate about what it all means, and there could be peace between the two.

Yes, a person can be religious and respect science. In spite of the argument of Evolution in general... most people (Amish excluded here) who are religious respect Science in one form or another (Technology, Biology, etc...) Just seems to be easy for people to just sling generalizations and "throw the baby out with the bathwater". But, of course, when those generalizations are turned around and used on them... they whine. *Sigh*

I do respect science. I do not enjoy it or think it exciting, I think it a very dull subject. Of course it can achieve some great things for society but in my personal life it is largely irrelevant. Knowing the number of planets Jupiter has or the chemical components of Zinc is really useless to me.

You can, and in fact you should.

If God is truly the Creator of all things, then He is the greatest scientist and inventor.

Read Leviticus. It is a difficult read - however there are a lot of things in it that are scientifically accurate.

Also, the book of Job talks about the world being hung up on nothing.

Isaiah talks about the circle of the earth.

These are things that we did not know scientifically for a long time - yet it is in there.

They do not always have conflicting sides. You can be religious and respect science.

HOWEVER, there are some conflicts (such as Genesis vs Evolution. Or Noah vs. Physics). Here you should decide are these stories, or is it fact? Is science right, or is faith?

I'll give you a hint...one side has evidence to support it :P

Science and Religion are both important parts of my life. The study of science has increased my appreciation for God as the master biologist, chemist, physicist, scientist, creator etc. Hymns such as "How Great Thou Art" have touched my heart even deeper because of my background in science.
