because there is 1 year olds and if the child left the gate open one year olds could escape.

Actually, it's not that advanced, I mean, my son is not even two and he can open locked cabinets already and climb over things. An almost 4 year old certainly can't be contained any more with a baby gate.

Four years old is a little old to be still using a baby gate. This child should know what's acceptable and what isn't, at this age.

Future rock climber! I had a climbing child, they are very exciting to keep up with. I would just lift them down and get a different gate. Or consider removing it, because if they can climb over it, that's a whole new worry.

how much under 4?? AT 3 they can watch you and figure out how to do most things they see. I would take down the gate and start teaching rules.

I'd think that they are very clever but that I have a problem. Difficult one cos if you put things in their way to obstruct them then that becomes a good tool to use...clever little things really. Nightmare for us parents though.
