i think what is possible is to get your joy and happiness so much from others happiness that in being selfish and looking after your own happiness you find yourself caring entirely for others, and so selfishness and altruism become the same thing. This would look like unselfishness, although it isnt really.

To be selfish is a way of self-preservation. We all need to be selfish to a point, therefore we avoid pain and welcome gratification and run if we are in danger.
Now there are limits of course, some stay in the selfish channel all the time, this is also not possible because we all have to socialize. An ultra selfish person is not positive for the collectivity, actually he/she becomes a burden

Do you mean in any given instance, or throughout a lifetime?
I'd say yes to the former, and no to the latter.

*eyebrow waggling* Ultimately? NO. However one CAN be completely altruistic. Tear that one around for awhile.
Hint: altruism ultimately benefits the "self".

No. All of our actions serve the purpose of satisfying our desires, even if that desire is directed towards someone else.

I don't think so either.
Almost everything we do has some benefit for ourselves.
