Because the liberals care so much about the prisoners "rights" that we can't make them get out and work anymore like we used to.

In the 1970's it was common for prisons to use prisoner labor to grow food on county prison farms and to perform county motor pool maintenance duties. There was a Federal lawsuit and the Supreme Court determined that it amounted to slavery for a government (or anybody else) to profit from a convict's labors. The prisoners were paid a pittance for their efforts (pennies per hour) and the Counties received an enormous benefit (hundreds of millions of dollars per year). It was considered slavery because the prisoners weren't free to seek comparative employment elsewhere and if they refused to work they were punished with additional time to serve.
The deep South is infamous for numerous corrupt Sheriffs who sub-contracted prisoner labor and made enormous profits for themselves.
The third reason is that most prisoners lack any reasonable job skills and cannot be trusted without constant supervision. Given that prisoners are society's failures, why should potential responsible employees be denied the opportunity to earn an honest living so that prisoners can be forced to do the same job for free. America has a chronic shortage of jobs for the least skilled of its citizens. The use of free prisoner labor will make these honest worker's lives even more difficult. Your suggestion might be appropriate if America had too many low-skill jobs and not enough labor to fill them. This is certainly not the case now.

The Whiz is the whiz. So right. As well, I think that prison should be a place for rehabilitation. Some people in prison spend time learning to improve their lives on their release. Why should they be forced to do menial labour when they might contribute more to society later by studying now? They will be getting out one day....and living next door to you.

Most people don't like the idea of convicted criminals coming into their neighborhoods for any reason. Here's an idea: Why not get welfare recipients to rebuild the slums and clean up the freeways and paint over graffiti and do all that community beautification stuff?

The idea of making prisoners work is a noble one, but having convicts out on streets will never fly. A lot of NAMBY sissies in this world would have a hissy fit.

Someone owns that substandard property that poor people can barely afford to rent. Now you want to give the cheap owners free labor? Your heart is in the right place, but you have to think it through a bit better.

Would you want someone that killed your loved one out in the community working ? I wouldn't . That is why there are legit buiding services and handy men and other proffesional people out there ,Let them do the work! Why take away good jobs from hard working families? Let the criminals rot in hell!
