Mostly, it is what his relationship with God lead him to do. Abram, later Abraham, was a man of faith, who talked to and was led by God.
This is the kind of relationship we are called to through Jesus. It is relationship based on faith, motivated by love, not rules and regulations. Abram's gift is an example, a benchmark, not just to be followed but to be exceeded, by giving what God asks, when He asks and to whom He asks.

It was a commandent, it is called the Law of the Tithe.
Abram was to give Melchizedek one tenth of all his posessions. With this one tenth, Melchizedek could build temples for people to worship in, and all things related to the development of the church at that time. It wasn't just Abram, although he is one that we read about, but many other members of the church then did it as well.
Read Malachi 3
Israel is commanded to pay tithes and offerings.

It was an offering to God given as a "thank you" for the deliverance that God has just given Abraham and his extended family (Lot). As it is difficult to give a material offering directly to a spiritual God. he gave it to a priest of God whom he meet at that time. The receiving (and then properly using) of material offering is one of the duties of a priest.

He was tithing, which is when you give the church, in this case the Mechizedek priesthood, a tenth of everything that comes into one's hands. Its giving back to God just a little of what he has given us, to show that he has priority in our lives.

He was tithing.
This set the pace for 10%.
It is old testament law.
No more in effect.
It is a form of tax.
In the new testament there are no levitical priests.
Therefore according to the law no one can collect tithes.
We who are of Jesus Christ are not under the levitical law. So we do not pay tithes.
Another false teaching.
