I am wanting to take my kids on a camping holiday like I used to with my parents but rules have changed so much and I am not sure if you can pitch a tent anywhere you like without having to get permission or pay a pitch fee. I particularly want to camp in the yorkshire dales or moors - any advice is appreciated.

Strictly speaking you need the permission of the land owner but in the more remote parts of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorks Moors you can get away with 'fly pitching' and no-one will mind. We've done so on a great many occasions and have never encountered any problems.

When I say 'the more remote parts' I'm talking about open upland areas, the places you need to walk to rather than drive and that are away from farming activities. There are a few roadside spots you can fly-pitch, a couple of popular ones are the grass opposite the Station Inn at Ribblehead and alongside the Buckden to Hawes road in Langstrothdale.

There's many 'green lanes' - these are public highways but aren't maintained, often they're nothing more than a path. Technically if you erected a tent on one you'd be obstructing the public highway but the fact that they don't exist as such means you can get away with it.

If you're happy to camp on the hills there's no end of possibilities, if you're wanting vehicle access you're going to be restricted to organised sites and a few hidden away places.

If you have an idea of the parts of the Dales or Moors you want to go to then e-mail me and I'll get back to you with some suggestions.
