Whew, this is a toughie! Not only is he your boss but you're also in his home.
Have you talked to him at all about smoking? Start by saying what you like about your job, all the plus points. Then I'd say -- as nicely and politely as possible -- that you're extremely effected by cigarette smoke. Tell him you're an ex-smoker (been there, done that and know the danger which is why you quit) and you know how hard it is to stop smoking (unless you were one of the lucky few for whom it was a cake walk!). Ask if there's any way the two of you could find a compromise: maybe a designated smoking place (far, far away from your switchboard) or specific smoking times (when you could take a break and leave the smoky area).
I hope you can work this out. But it's entirely possible that you may end up looking for another job!
Good luck!

Even though the business is in his home, doesn't he still have to follow the same laws for any business? I live in Alaska and the law against smoking does apply to businesses in ones home. Why don't you check on this?

I get the idea that you either like your job a lot or need it badly because of the money. If so and the law can't help, I don't know what you will be able to do. If you can easily get another job which pays as well, I would tell him very nicely that because of the smoke you are afraid that you will have to quit because of your health. Then the ball is in his court. He can do something about it in order to retain you as an employee or he can accept your resignation.

This is a rough situation and he is very wrong to do this. I am sorry for your trouble.

Just ask politely if he wouldn't mind not smoking in the same room as you or get a fan that blows it away from you (or an ioniser which takes it out of the air). Say its affecting your work. What is the ventilation like - ask to work by the open window.

Explain that the smoke is irritating to you and ask him to please not smoke around you. It's not a perfect solution if you are still in the same house, but he would, hopefully, be agreeable to at least keep his direct smoke away from you.

Just kindly explain it to your manager. If he doesn't understand... Tell him how it's bothering your work habits... That is why you're there anyways... to work. If he is a kind person, he should understand. :)
