I need to go from JFK airport into mid-town Manhattan, (GCT or Port Authority area). Is there a better way to get there than the subway?

Cabs are not only more expensive, but, esp. in rush hour, are slower than the Airtrain/subway connection. Fastest: take Airtrain to Howard Beach; take A train to 42d St. (Port Authority station) As I recall this station connects via undergound to Times Sq. station. There take 42d St. Shuttle direct to GCT. (Total fare $7.00) 2d fastest: Airtrain to Jamaica. Take E train direct to 8th & 42d (Port Auth. station) or, tranfer at Lexington Ave. to 6 downtown, one stop to GCT. (Total fare $12.00 weekdays; $8.00 weekends)

Cabs from the airport to anywhere in Manhattan have a flat fee you can take advantage of. It is $45 or something like that. Its very easy, but obviously, not quite as cheap as a $2.00 subway fee. Given the complications involved in the Airbus/subway/bus from the airport, I recommend the cab. Alternatively, you can get a private car by calling 212-777-7777. I don't know the price, but supposedly reasonable.

the main inexpensive way is to take the JFK Airtrain to Jamaica, Queens, then getting the E practice (subway line) into long island. The Airtrain is $5, and the subway is $2.25. the maximum effective way is to take a yellow taxi, $40 5 flat fare plus tolls and tip. between long island and JFK Airport is the only flat fare for taxis.

From JFK take the the tram ride from JFK to the train, being the LIRR at Jamaica train station. From there take the LIRR to Penn Station. To Port Authority bus station you could walk it's only eight blocks, or take the A or E train to 42nd street. To GCT, take the 1,2, 3, A or E to 42nd Street, then take the crosstown shuttle to GCT.

subway is the cheapest, but possibly not direct. you may need to transfer. Taxi is expensive and pending on traffic it can take a long time.
