Our Cats have always been pretty chatty, infact Our kitten Ellie was for a time nick named winnie butt due to her constant meowing. She is now almost a year old, and is still quite talkative. I have also known some very chatty older cats. I haven't met too many who don't talk at all. But I think it is a personality thing. Though I could be very wrong.

They probably feel lonely. They've been cooped up in the house all day long, all alone, with nobody to talk to so, naturally, when the owner returns home from work cats want to have a conversation, to find out how the day went, if anything exciting happened, to complain about their stomach problems...you know, the usual stuff after a hard day of work (for the owner) and a lazy boring day at home (for the cat).
Do you take time out to listen to your cat or do you, like most people, just say "yeah, yeah...be quiet already"?

What do you mean when they get old - my cat (he's 1 and a half) has talked non stop since he was 6 weeks old!!!
He is even cheeky and miaows at me in a cheeky way when I tell him not to do something.
He's going to be even worse when he is a little old man. It is really cute though.
Its like cats turn into those little old people that chat away to cashiers in tescos!!

Not necessarily. I know of one quite young queen cat who will tell you about her whole day when you say hello. Whereas my 9 year old tom will only wibble at the birds in the garden to go away because he knows he can't catch them.

They're trying to tell you they want to get warm. Your cat can't go in the closet and put on his winter jacket. if he's cold and chatty... he's trying to tell you to find a way to make him warm.

My cat is so loud these days, but apparently she has something wrong with her thyroid. She's not in any pain, just a bit forgetful and lonely so we have to pay her loads of attention!

I guess the same reason humans do: It's their way of staying in touch with the world, so to speak.
