Card counting is not illegal, but if a casino thinks you are doing so, then they may ask you to leave. With multiple decks and constant re-shuffling of the decks it is very hard to count the cards. You have to know all of the cards that have been played in order to get an accurate count. People that can count cards have more talent then i will ever have so good luck...

You can count cards anyway you like it is not illegal as someone said. How can using your skill to win a game be illegal? Even the casino lobby groups would never get that law to pass!
The only time it becomes illegal is if you use a device to count cards, because that is a form of cheating.
All that's going to happen is if you keep winning at Blackjack, they are going to eventually ask you to leave the Blackjack area or even the casino. If you keep going back they will get you listed and other casinos will ban you. The more you win, the more aggressive they will become at kicking you out.
Personally I think a better option is to spend your time becoming a good poker player. The casino doesn't give a crap who wins at poker, so you just need to learn to beat the other players. When you win at poker you are taking peoples money. When you win at black jack you are taking the casino's money which is a very different proposition.
If you are going to invest all that time and effort into black jack, you might just as well spend that same time learning poker. You'll make more money in the long run, and piss off less of the casinos. Counting cards is not easy to do, and it seems like a lot of work to learn a skill that is only going to get you kicked out.

Do a lot of computer simulations and practice a lot before actually trying out the real thing. Try to aim for perfection! Try out shoes after shoes at home and when you can do it with close to no mistake many shoes in a row, you should be ready.
Maybe you heard about the MIT team, to get in it you had to play 10 full shoes with no Basic Strategy mistake and no betting mistake, and they were also paying wrong ammounts on some hands so you also had to tell every times they were. If you can deal cards, bet with the count, play perfect basic strategy, keep the count and do the payouts all by yourself, you are pretty much ready. All you need to do afterwards is to work on your camouflage. If a level 3 counting system is too hard, try Hi-Low or an easier system.

Card counting is not "illegal" in most casinos as long as you do not use anything but your brain (no computers, no partners, etc). However, casinos have the right to limit your play for any reason. If you are very successful at the blackjack table, they may ask you to quit playing, whether you are card counting or not.
The people arrested for "card counting" (most famous was the MIT group) were using many illegal means to win, including teams of players, computers, hidden signals, etc.
Some dealers will even explain how card counting is done, since very few players ever become good enough to win consistently.

I would not recommend card counting although it is not illegal the casino can throw you out at any time if they think that you are card counting they will also let other casinos know & then you will be on a list of suspected card counters.
Do you really want to be on such a list, just enjoy your time in the casino.GOOD LUCK

Card counting is a skill which the casinos whis a person did not have. If you are suspected of counting a casino may ask you to leave and ban you. They may also inform other casinos to do the same. Eventually you may not have any place to apply your counting skills so why do it.

MANY PEOPLE HAVE DONE QUITE WELL BEING A CARD COUNTER. THEY HAVE MADE IT THEIR FULL TIME JOB. YOU SHOULD KNOW THERE IS A LOT MORE TO IT THAN TRACKING THE PLAYED CARDS. IT WOULD BE A WISE INVESTMENT TO BUY A COPY OF "TURNING THE TABLES ON LAS VEGAS". BY READING IT YOU WILL LEARN HOW IAN ANDERSEN MADE A LIVING COUNTING CARDS. CARD COUNTING HAS NEVER BEEN ILLEGAL, AS LONG AS YOU ONLY USE YOUR SKILL. AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE TO DO IT FOR YOU IS CHEATING.

you won't be the first or the last to attempt to improve the odds in your favor by counting cards.
however, people who believe that they can beat the casino for enough to make it big are usually quite deluded about the level of skill they bring to the table.
the only people gambling in a casino are the customers. the house always wins in the end.
