If I wasn't able to watch the person prepare it, it would have to be something pre-packaged!

Or it could be a piece of fruit or a veggie- something I could take home and wash. :-)

well, in our country, there are lots of foods being sold just beside the street....street foods are delicious and sometimes its just not the same experience if you cook the same food at home...street foods are much more enjoyable - you just have to be wary of the quality (sanitation-wise)... but usually the rule is if many people regularly buy it, then most probably no one has had an upset stomach or any negative experience from eating it, then it is relatively safer than others....there's a type of ice cream sold in the streets which we locally call "dirty ice-cream" but its not dirty at all - and most are produced with the strictest standards..the connotation that is is "dirty" is mainly due to the fact that it is sold on the streets...its delicious and has a unique taste from ice cream made by big companies! there's also the banana cue - a certain type of banana covered with crunchy caramelized sugar...fish balls, squid balls, chicken balls, even calamares are sold by the streets. we also have the "taho" which is a soy product mixed with brown sugar syrup and sago (a small round gelatinuos food, much like gelatin only round). there's also the kamote fries - slices of sweet potato cooked in the same way as the banana cue, sweet corn are also sold, along with its own variant, cheese corn.....there are many more street foods here....its a totally different dining experience...and also inexpensive...

I've bought a lot of food from vendors in different cities. Everything from fruit, vegetables, hot dogs, pretzels, cheese steaks, chips, sandwiches, and chinese food. In my experience, I am most comfortable when I can watch them make it in front of me, and the ingredients are simple.

I'd mostly go to vendors that get a lot of business so that the food is fresh every day. The best food I had were cheese steaks and (believe it or not) chinese food. These were both prepared right in front of me, and it's amazing to watch people fill a wok with fresh vegetables and stir fry it right in front of you.

What I would never get (again) is anything with tomato sauce or mayonaise. These things can go bad very quickly in the hot sun or the heat inside of a food truck or cart. Not only can they go bad, but they can result in food poisoning, and that's no fun at all.

Look for the busy vendors. They usually have the best food.

A hot dog or a sausage. You can't mess these up as they are pre-cooked to start with and have little chance of food poisoning. The rest, buyer beware!

Anything from the taco trucks. Four bucks and I have enough food for 2 days.
