If you are sure you are happy w/ them, I would definitely wash them. When I worked in a high end woman's clothing store I couldn't believe some of the returns people brought in. They were obviously worn, and some for days and more than once. But w/ "the customer is always right" policy we took them back, and hung them out to be sold.
Regarding baby clothes, I think it should be a given. Babies tend to have sensitive skin.Even dust, from hanging in the store, might bother them.
Better safe than sorry.

I know people who wash baby clothes we give as presents before they let their kids wear them. I don't think a previous infant came by and tried those clothes on. I don't think factories (even sweat shops) leave finished clothes on the floor to collect dust. ANd what about those stone washed jeans - obviously they were washed before being shipped to customers.

I think it is just a strange OCD habit some people have without a rational reason.

I don't think this is really an etiquette issue, but okay. I would wash them. First of all, who know who's been trying them on? Also, I find that if I wear something new without washing it, the chemicals and sizing left from the maufacturer irritates my skin.

I definitely wash all my clothes before i wear them because I have allergy's to red and yellow dyes and other additives in colored clothing.

I work at a clothing store, but I personally don't wash what I buy. I know I should but I don't. You can always ask the salesperson to give you a shirt or pants from the stock room if you think the clothes are "dirty."

yes! as a student i worked for a big clothing distribution company that serviced high-end stores, and if you saw what those clothes go through before they make it to the fancy stores, you'd wash them right away!!

Always. Especially clothes that have been shipped from over seas. They can containe parasites which can get into you, plus you never know who tried them on and when was the last time they showered.

It is advisable. Especially if it is a dark color, as the color may spread/bleed onto your skin or other clothes/furniture if it gets wet or you sweat. Besides, how many other people tried it on before you bought it ?
