Your analogy of Barnum and Bailey is appropriate. Boxing is a whacko sport. Who else would want to hit people, or watch people hit each other but a nutjob?
Gotta love it.

Smitty, boxing hype has indeed been going on for a long time and some fighters were masters at it particularly Ali. There has nearly always been a good guy vs the bad guy as it is good for the promotion of the fight. A great example was Ali vs Liston with Liston of course being the bad guy. Tyson is a different story however with remarks about eating children which is clearly overboard.

Yeah, most of it is just hype, all the taunting and badmouthing, but in the case of Duran insulting Leonard's wife, that's just ignorant. He called her a whore, and that's crossing the line if you ask me. He really didn't like Ray. Most of Ali's stuff was just clowning and trying to gain a mental edge on his opponent. Tyson? Mostly hype!

agree to a certain degree. some fighters use it for hype and some just have it in their nature. some fighters are fighters 24/7. being a former fighter, i actually thought the things that many fighters said. another thing, after fighting for awhile you need to find a reason for you to want to go to war and render your opponent unconscious; you insult another fighter hoping he will oblige you and insult you to get your juices flowing. more often than not, it is not hype. fighters do have a general dislike for other fighters. ex. floyd mayweather really dislikes oscar because of his status in boxing and money making power. if not for oscar he would not be getting the money he is getting. duran had a genuine dislike for leonard because everybody loved him and he was considered the goldenboy. many times it is not hype, believe me.....

I agree with you. A lot of the stuff you see like the arguing at the press conference's and things like that are just hype. But some of it is genuine dislike that certain fighters have toward one another. Riddick Bowe and Jorge Luis Gonzalez was a prime example of that. They almost came to blows on numerous occasions and after one ugly incident in which Gonzalez threw a glass at Bowe, the fighters had to have separate press conferences and a seperate weigh in to keep them from hurting each other before the actual fight. And Herbie Hide and Michael Bent got into a very nasty altercation after a photo shoot that left both fighters bruised and both got fined for the scrap. Personally, i'm not a fan of this type of crap and i think it hurts the sport to a degree. But i defenitely understand it because i've been in it long enough to. Do what you can to put butts in the seats. I guarantee you the majority of fans who will be tuning in May 5th want to see Mayweather lose, and he's doing his part to hype the fight even more by acting out at the press conferences.

Smitty ~
The fight sold out in near record breaking fashion. The press conferences were covered by all major news networks. Jay Leno and David Letterman both talked about this fight. Need I write more? Floyd sold the show. Everybody likes a good guy bad guy story.
Peace my Brother.

I agree somewhat, Tyson just took it to a whole nother level when he bit holyfields ear off. Also the breaking the law every other week, trobled marriage, all gave him bad publicity. The trash talking was not the problem.

Hype = Promotion = Profitability. Also some boxers, not all, feel that is gives then a mental edge over they're opponent.

Only ****** feel the need to insult one another. A lack of intelligence is most likely the culprit.
