The 12 disciples believed Jesus to be the Messiah, but they misunderstood. They thought, like all Jews did, that the Messiah would come and establish God's kingdom on earth as a king. So, they all felt that Jesus was going to establish the kingdom right then and there, the Romans would be defeated and they would reign.
It wasn't until right after Judas left to betray Jesus that He told the disciples in plain Aramic (His spoken language) that He was going to be crucified, but would arise again in three days.
This upset the disciples. It's like they had limited hearing, because all they absorbed was that Jesus would die. They were so wrapped up in being upset that it didn't sink in that Jesus would rise again in three days.
That is why when Mary Magdalene came to Peter and told him that Jesus had arisin, at first they were astounded. In fact, Thomas didn't believe it at all, and demanded proof. Jesus gave him that proof. That is why we use the phrase "Doubting Thomas."

I believe they knew what was going on to a certain extent. They knew Jesus Christ for who He was. They witnessed many of His miracles and heard His many teachings over His three years of preaching. But I do not think they understood what He was talking about when He first started talking about His having to leave them. John 16:17-18 shows this. They soon understood what He was saying though when He came back from the dead.

In reality they were all leaders, that is the reason why Christ selected them, they followed to learn and led the world into the belief of Christ.
Thanks for the opportunity to spread the Gospel of Christ, God bless you always.

It is clear in Scripture that they did not know it all... But they were chosen By God for His purpose... They were given The Word and the instructions on what to do with it... and God led them as He wanted them to go.
