The head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, pretty much prefers the scalp. Generally head lice do not transmit other diseases.

The body louse, Pediculus corporis, prefers the trunk and extremities, warm and slightly moist. Of the three types of lice, they are associated with poor hygeine, and may transmit other diseases such as typhus, trench fever and relapsing fever.

The pubic louse is known as Phthrisis pubis, and looks something like a crab under the microscope, hence the knickname, "crabs." Pubic lice are most likely sexually transmitted, and sexual parters should be treated, too. Pubic lice can attach to other hairy areas such as the amrpits, beard, eyebrows and eyelashes.
