The build-up for the De la Hoya - Mayweather fight may be hype, but Mayweather does seem a bit more excited while doing it than I would expect. ;-D
Have you ever seen a situation like in school where two kids would bump into each other and someone else would start yelling "Fight! Fight!"? For some people, it may be that type of mentality--that they just get excited whenever they can sense any bad blood between people, even if it really isn't there. That's not the highlight of boxing, but it may pull in a few new fans who eventually learn more about what the sport is really about.
On the other hand, you mentioned Tyson in another question, and it raises the issue that many people just see boxers as one-dimensional characters, so it's easy for them to see whatever a boxer is doing as representative of who he really is. :-(

As you may have guessed by now, i'm not a Mayweather fan. Maybe some of his crap is hype, but i just don't like fighters that talk a lot of junk. Can't stand James Toney or Laila Ali either. And Floyd talks all this trash, then cries like a baby after the Baldomir fight, what's that about? He's still a jerk to me! Hype or no hype. Sure wasn't hype when he beat that woman up, that's why he's a jerk.

Smitty good question! It is very obvious to me that what Floyd is doing is pre fight hype and nothing new or unusual. I have seen this long before there was a Floyd Mayweather Jr. and has been part of boxing history as you well know.

Agree. Actually De LA Hoya responds better in these situations like against Mayorga. Ricardo made a lot of pre hype comments that fueled De La Hoya to train harder and Oscar said it made him fight better. Mayorga appoligized afterwards and De La Hoya accepted as he knew it was part of the hype. Mayweather talked trash against Ghatti and after beating him soundly retracted his statements and said it was all talk and he really was a great fighter. So I agree it is all hype but not sure it is all necessary.

This I totally agree with you. How many times have you seen Mayweather talk s**t about his opponents and he shakes there hand and talks good about them after the fight. Great example is Arturo Gatti fight.

I think they see it, they just don't react to it. It's not ignorance it's apathy, they just don't care. I think Floyd's antics don't even phase DeLa Hoya, and even hurt Floyd's image to an extent but it seems it's part of the game. What can you do, on May 5th, it will all be moot, and the talking will be over.
