I want to take advantage of IE7 & WMP 11, so I'm thinking about getting a "legal" copy of XP. However, I don't want to spend $300 on OS software that will become oboselete in a year or two or three! Also, I don't want to buy a new PC when my 2002 HP Pavillion suits me just fine.

What do y'all think?

Most Microsoft OS have a 10 year support, except some of the low end Vista. So, I not sure when XP come out, but, it be good until around 2012/2015. I still use 98SE on one computer, that support died last year. My 2000 Pro I assume is good until 2010.
OK, fist, I learn Polish, so, when I get to Microsoft on life support it show in Polish, sorry. It mat show English for you. But, here;
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean23/ it show April 2009. That is XP home and media.

On the one hand, IE 7 and WMP 11 offer no advantages over other browsers and players. And people, especially businesses, are not exactly snatching up Vista by a long shot.

On the other hand, it is nice to be legal. Looks like your choices are buy Vista or go without IE7 and WMP11, which I do even though I can have them if I want them [well, I guess I have them, but I don't use 'em.]

your PC isn't probably fit for Windows Vista anyway and considering this, it's cheaper to buy a OS than a new PC and an OS as well... XP will probably still be around for another 3 years, enough to let your 2002-PC look completely out-dated.

I think that Microsofot will support XP for at least another 5-6 years. This is more than enough for any newly purchased operating system.

It will be around for several years, because the new software has just come out. Microsoft still supports Millennium edition and that came out in 2000. So, I suppose you will guess from that.
