a good electronic meter or multimeter should have a hold button. usually it has hold, max, min and average.

if your meter doesn't have this feature, then I guess your kind of out of luck.

********update********

do you mean a house power meter? as the other responder eluded to? threw me....

best way is just turn off stuff you aren't useing....
there is a way to change the calibration on them but you have to remove them and the have tale tells so youd get busted anyways....it isn't worth it.

I assume that you're talking about a watt-hour meter.

The only legal way to do it is to generate power on your side of the meter. If you have the appropriate connection and safety circuitry, you can feed power back into the system which will slow the meter. If you feed in the same amount of power as you are using, the meter will stop. And if you generate an excess of power you can get the meter to run backward.
