I'm not sure if I want an ultra compact or SLR model, just as long as it's compatible to both platforms.

Everything is compatible with everything... even if the camera manufacturer doesn't include drivers for a specific operating system, you can always pop the memory card into a card reader and transfer your pictures that way.

there are no cameras that are only compatible with Apple or only compatible with Windows.

All digital cameras record in jpg or similar formats. Those files can be read by both Apple and Windows computers.

If you asking about file format compatibality, then the answers is as long as the digital camera produce jpeg files, it compatible with all OS (WIN,APPLE,IBM).

if you asking about connectivity from your camera to PC, the answer still compatible with all OS as long as the PC have USB or Firewire connection.
