The opening scene with Jesus being tempted by the devil in the garden is off base. The devil did not know that Jesus was going to be the sin bearer. The scripture is clear that had he known this, they would not have crucified Him.(I Cor 2:8)
The scene with Mary wiping up the blood is not only pure speculation, but likely an entirely Catholic insertion to add credence to the heretical notion that Mary is co-redemptrix with Christ.
Also, they continually showed demons/satan as some sort of ugly misshapen things, when in fact, at least as far as satan is concerned, he was gloriously beautiful. That's part of the pull - charisma. (Isa 14)
Lastly, though I am sure they beat Jesus mercilessly, there is some scripturaly evidence that He could not have died had He not willed it so. When He said, "Into thy hands I commit my spirit," He was willing Himself to die. The scripture says, "I have power to lay down my life and to take it up again. This command I received from my Father." (John 10:17,18) If He were beaten half to death, why was it so surprising to the romans that He had died so soon?
Hope this helps!
Tom

Actually, Mary Magdelne isn't named until she shows up around the time of the crusifixion and resserection. It's assumed she's the one with the seven demons and/or the adultress. It's not really mentioned in the bible who that woman is/women are.
I rather liked the movie. It made me cry and shake, but I thought it was beautifully done. Crusifixion wasn't a pretty sight, so I didn't mind the blood and gore.
It's funny. We can go see a move like "The Hills have Eyes 2", "Saw" or "Hostle" and not flinch at the blood and gore, but put it in a religious film and people get offended. It wasn't pretty. Who knows, it could have been worse then what Mel Gibson showed it to be, we'll never know. But it wasn't a few lashes and little blood. IT was ugly and painful and humiliating.

No. In fact I've never watched it. I didn't like the controversy the was surrounding the film a few years ago and even though it's entertainment, I just didn't get a good feeling about it. It's not surprising that you've found inconsistencies in the movie; it's mainly made to sell movie tickets, not teach people about Christ.
I have been studying about Jesus' last days on earth though. Looking at the suffering that he and God went through makes me think about my dedication as a Christian to serve God.

No, I've never yet seen it and honestly have no interest in it. If I want to watch an entertaining religious movie I'll watch the Ten Commandments.. at least Charlton Heston is worth watching.

You are right there. Mary Magdalene is commonly known as having been a prostitute too...but she was not, according to scripture. She was demon possessed.
The film is very moving, and I believe the good qualities far outweigh any errors of doctrine.
What a price our precious Savior paid for us!

No, but I'm sure I'll catch a bit of The Ten Commandments on television. That movie is always shown this time of year. I don't know why I like to watch it (I'm an atheist), maybe I just like the old-timey quality of it.

I hadn't planned on it since normally I'm in a passion play this week but my church didn't do it this year. I agree about Mary M. I've played her many times in many plays and have researched many times about her trying to find out what I can and nowhere in scripture does it say she was a prostitute.

My thoughts are that this is an over-hyped, violently bloody, movie by a man who has serious issues. While I respect Jesus as a teacher, and an altruistic, compassionate MAN (not an omnipotent being), this movie is a tragedy in so many ways. NO I will NOT be watching.

I hadn't thought about it, but now that you mention it, I think I will watch it again this week. It's good to remember the price that was paid for our iniquities, peace, healing, sins, and salvation.
As far as the scene with Mary M. in it, my reaearch show this about John 8:3: 3 "And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst"
Verse 3. A woman taken in adultery] Some of the popish writers say that her name was Susanna; that she was espoused to an old decrepid man, named Manasseh; that she died a saint in Spain, whither she had followed St. James. These accounts the judicious Calmet properly terms fables. (Power BibleCD is Copyright 2001)
