I surf on the east coast in Charleston, SC. I have seen many sharks, usually around where people are fishing or sometimes around a school of fish. I have never been attacked by one. Depends on where you are to see what kind of sharks inhabit the waters.

Yes I have seen some Cat Sharks (The cat sharks or catsharks are a family (Scyliorhinidae) of sharks, with over 110 species recorded. Paradoxically perhaps, while the group is called the cat shark family, many species are commonly called dogfish.)
I identify my shark as a Scyliorhinus canicula, but its never attack me !
Cheers !

Sharks are always around the line up. We surf near jetties and fishing piers where guys are reeling in shark all the time. Never think about them actually. There have been few incidents, but most were probably mistaken identity.

I've seen a few from the beach and one while I was in the water. It didn't bother me and I didn't bother it.
