It is very common for teething babies to become very cranky, get fevers and the works. It can be a terrible time for baby and caregiver.
I volunteered in church nurseries for years and have two young children of my own. I could see the teething children coming for miles. They were agitated, uncomfortable and nearly inconsolable.
As far as a solution, I'm not sure how well the teething rings are working for you, but they never worked for my chidren. I found that mine enjoyed chewing on a damp, good quality rag or cloth under close supervision, of course. Also, a little teething gel might give you and baby a well-needed break.
You'll need to get your baby to the pediatrician to have a look at his ears. It's very likely he has an ear infection.

I have three kids and they had the fever, crying fits and all that when they were teething but never the grabbing of the ears. The only time they did that was if they had an ear infection. But the other symptoms are normal

Those answers are given more by doctors reciting textbooks than by caring parents. You might want to make sure he doesn't have an ear infection, but all mine have had those symptoms with teething. Let them chew on a cotton swab dipped in Chloraseptic - it works for immediate pain relief. Tylenol or Ibuprofen work for the fever and long term pain. Good luck!

Yes, both of my kids acted like this too. Especially with their molars. It has to hurt & be very uncomfortable to have teeth growing inside your gums & breaking through, I don't know why some people think it wouldn't, it sure would bother me! My kids seemed to have a few bad days, then it would stop & they would have a few good days, then it would start again. It took awhile for the teeth to finally come in all the way. I would give them anything cold that they could chew on that wouldn't choke them, Tylenol & rub Baby Ambusal on their gums. It helped more than other things I tried. I hope your little boy feels better soon! Good Luck!!!

From what I understand, doctors don't like to say that those are symptoms of teething (although I believe they are)because they don't want parents to overlook something more serious; they don't want parents making their own diagnoses and keeping home a child who should be seen. But I never took my son to the doctor with the teething symptoms...just figured it was teething :) But the ear-grabbing could be a sign of infection.

Well, whoever is giving you info is wrong. His symptoms are right on. And you may want to have a doc look at his ears, cause the grabbing the ears could be an ear infection which is quite painful for baby.

sounds like he is teething but probably also has an ear infection (this would be the grabbing the ears)
take him to the doc asap
and yes my daughter was irratible with fever and diarrhea while she was teething and whoever said they are not symptoms of teething is stupid and crazy

Every time my son would get a new tooth...my babysitter ( who has 30 years experience) would call me home from work. He would be cranky and always have a fever. He also cried and grabbed at his ears. Try some teething tablets, not orajel (my son screamed worse when i used orajel). if it is not teething, then its probably an ear infection.

Every time my son got a tooth, he would get sick. They say it's not a symptom of teething, but BALOGNE. It is. He would pull at his ears, and he would have diarreah. AT first i would freak out like, oh no he needs to go to the doctor, but then I would look in his mouth and be like..oh, nevermind. Trust me, he's fine. Everything your reading only says that as a precaution.

I don't know where you've been reading but my baby was incredibly irritable when she was teething and did ocassionally have fever and diarrhea. Every baby is different.
