Does anyone know when the news of the invasion of the Falklands reached the UK?

The invasion happened on 2nd April 1982. Does anyone remember if the news reached the UK media on that day, or did it take until the next day?

Thanks

As far as I can remember the News reached The UK the same day transmitted from HMS Endurance and via Port Stanley Telephone Exchange.
In actual fact a lot of information came out of Stanley over the next few days if people who left the Islands once under Argentine Control.
Certainley the MOD knew about the Invasion. Unfortunatley there was nothing that could be done, the Falkland Island Defence Force and Marine Party, HMS Endurance where all advised and put on alert a number of hours before the Landings happened. Two attack subs had been dispatched (HMS Splendid and HMS Superb) but would take over a week to arrive.

Welll, the news reached Britain in hours. media-and world reaction--condemned the Argentine actions. There was a lot of debate over the next few weeks about how effective the British response could be. Many though the British Navey wasn't the power it had once been and Britain would be forced to negotiate. Obviously, that's what teh Argentinian government believed.

To make a long story short--Braitain offered to negotiate the withdrawal of Argentina's forces--and gave the argentinians until the Royal Nave could gather its forces annd make the voyage south to comply (not quite that blunt-but you get the idea). The Argentinean governeent thought the British were bluffing. They weren't.--it wasn't even a contest. End of "invasion." :)

A Falklander radioed a message about the invasion on the day. The BBC picked it up and confirmed it later that day. There was a programme on BBC Radio 4 last week about it - it will probably still be on their website.

Who cares when we found out.

There was no need for it and too many people died or were injured needlessly.

And all to satisfy huge egos. British and Argentinian.
