I have read the websites and other sources but I want to hear from personal experiences. Does Mercer really give good financial aid packages? Approxiamately how much? Did you have to take out a large amount of loans to cover the rest of the balance?

How much financial aid do you think they would give someone like me. I live in a household of 6 and together my parents make around $47,000 a yr. I will be the only one in college in my family because my other siblings are young. I have a 3.8 GPA also.

Thanks for the input and remember I want personal experiences. Not just some info from off collegeboard.com or something. I want information from either yourself or a friend/relative you know that has been there.

Thanks again everyone.

The answer is that it varies from student to student the amount of financial aid each student receives at a university because no two situations are the same. It is based on the FAFSA EFC score on whether or not a person receives a Pell Grant. Also, some programs come with certain financial aid programs such as nursing and education if you promise to work in a critical need area for a certain amount of time. I will list some free resources that should help you locate money for college.

First, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.

Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Third, fill out the FAFSA form. It will help tap into federal and state need based financial aid along with scholarship money from the college itself. It is based on the parents' income and savings along with your income and savings. The form becomes available on January 1 for the upcoming fall semester or quarter. It needs to be renewed each year until college graduation. This should be filled out in her senior year.

Fourth, current high school students can locate local scholarship information at the high school guidance office.

Fifth, good grades and SAT/ACT scores do pay in the form of state grants and scholarships. The state of Georgia has a $3000 Hope scholarship which is renewalable each year if a high school student student has a 3.0 GPA. I recommend study hard for the SAT/ACT and raise your test scores as high as possible if there is enough time because it can better the chances of a merrit scholarship.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Good luck!

Mercer University Financial Aid

You will probably have a 0 EFC or close to it, meaning you will be eligible for the maximum amount of aid. This is only if your parents support all 4 of you (and siblings) as well as themselves and don't have like $100,000 in the bank or own various stocks, properties, or businesses worth a bunch more.

I don't know much about Mercer, but you can expect to get ~$4050 in Pell grants (the max) with a 0 EFC, plus whatever grants Mercer has in whatever amounts (varies by school, availability, cost of education). They probably won't cover the whole amount.

You'll also be eligible for subsidized loans, which means you won't pay any interest while you're in school (a very good thing).

Fill out the FAFSA, let us know your EFC, and we can help more.

It isn't up to the individual colleges to give financial aid. All students need to fill out an application at:

fafsa.ed.gov

You will need your parents (if you are under 18) current tax papers to answer the questions. FAFSA goes by parental income to determine your financial aid award. You can also go to:

fastweb.com

To apply for scholarships. The individual colleges will have a list of scholarships available through them, however all student loans and financial aid goes through the government.

Hope this helps.
