After two years of being quit, I slipped last night and smoked a couple of cigarettes. I am NOT picking up the habit again but I can't stop this guilty feeling. I feel disappointed in myslef. Can any other former smokers give me some advice or words of encouragement?

I know its easy to feel guilty. I have been in the same boat. Just think of it as a step back. you cant do it over again and not have the cig. so just say ok i had a cig, next time what can i do to make sure i do not fall in that trap again. If you ever do have a cig again, do not feel guilty. I think it happens to alot of ex smokers.

I could never understand why people who quite a habit feel such a compulsion to never touch the substance that was once habitual again. Why do recovering alcoholics not touch a drink years after quitting? Do they lack self-control? I smoked one year of my life back in freshman year of college. I now smoke a cigarette or two a month and feel no need to get back into it. There is nothing wrong with smoking a butt after quitting as long as you don't pick up the habit again.

Heck, in my opinion, it's better to have a smoking habit than an eating habit. All the old fishermen in Spain I know are like 90 and they have been smoking since their teen years, but they eat nothing but fish potatoes beans vegetables all their life.

It's normal to feel guilty after slipping. Look at it in a positive manner - you feel bad about it so use that to not smoke again. I was stupid - after 2 years of not smoking I had a few and felt guilty but then a few weeks later I had a few more thinking I could control it and it went downhill from there. Been back at it for 5 years now.

Don't kid yourself about it and just keep on trucking! Your doing great.

You have reasons to feel guilty. This also is a good sign and gives some hope for you. Without this feeling of guilt im not sure you would be successful in stopping to smoke.

my friend quit smoking after havin done so for probably 13 years...he has a few now and then, mostly when he drinks, but to be honest, i think its a social or behavioral response rather than that addiction. i wouldnt worry about it at all unless you have that URGE to smoke again, then the addiction is rearing its ugly head. its a habit that just needs to be broken, thats all. congrats on quitting and keep up the good work!

That was dumb. Quit beating yourself up over it. Remember, your health is your wealth.
