We'll use Christianity because it is the most popular religion on these boards by far.
Christians assume that their god is real. They assume that the Bible is correct. Assumations are okay because they are what theories are built off of. But until you have proof, an assumation can only lead to a theory, not a fact.
There are no concrete facts behind the bible.
If I told you that if you gave me every penny you made and lived in a hovel all your life that you would be a millionaire quicker than if you managed your own finances, would you assume I was telling you the truth? Of course not.

Had I started when you were very, very young? Probably.

Don't you see what your fellow man has done to you? You are being controlled, and the only reason I'm allowed to tell you this is because no one is going to believe me because the brainwashing is still so absoloute.

"Are you atheist? If so, you are alone and you have no answers, no way of explaining how the world was created, what happened before time. I have those answers, and you're saying I'm wrong? Screw you buddy! Here, look, when EVERYBODY tells you you're wrong, it must be you. Not everyone else can be wrong..."

This is the kind of rubbish I'm talking about. Just because you believe something it must be true. Just because I don't come up with a counter lie, your lie must be the truth. Can you honestly not see the flaw there? If everyone else believes it, it must be true!? Hello, is the Earth still flat?

You just admitted to being brainwashed. If you were a prosecuting lawyer, would you tell the judge that the accused killed someone but don't believe him when he says he didn't because, pfft, of COURSE that's what he'd say!

Yeah you wouldn't last long.

So, EyeLovesJesus, basically you admit that before you were 28 you were an idiot. And suddenly you find this religion that fixes everything and obviously you were so screwed up before because you didn't have that religion! Scapegoats are neat! Has it occurred to you that you might still be an idiot?

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.

The assumptions you term is called Faith.
Faith is something people are willing to believe in and even go to the stake for it. We all tend to have faith in something (good or evil) , whether one can prove whether it is right or wrong.
lets pick Christianity....as you said so...
Christianity gives the hope of forgiven sins (sin- an act/deed/thought against the will of God) through the person of Jesus Christ and eternal life with God Himself and that is a huge claim to make. If one says it is not true, give me something else to replace it with.
In the case one cannot provide a solution for the case, one leaves with the best option in the offering.
Personally I am convinced that there is no name in heaven or on earth that is given unto man by which you shall be saved other than Jesus Christ.
Well, if the proof is right there after one dies the faith is proven for you and for argument sake someone asks what if it is not as I believed, well in that case it doesnt matter becos I will be dead anyways.
Why must I know now completely?
That is a demand you are placing on the faith/theory.
For example: In a fairy tale how come no one asks the fairy Godmother, why not or why is it the way you say it to be? It is a question never raised but yet people believe in fairy tales more than a pomise made to real people by God Himself.

Hello Ferret.. :)

I say this with "Love"..

I do not assume the Bible is correct..I know without a shadow of a doubt, that it is the "Word of God".. :)

My life is "proof" enough for me..It is a "fact" that I used to be a drug addict, an alchololic, a hate monger, child abuser and a whore.. :(

Some Scientists even use the Bible, to retrace our history..

I was an Atheist up until the age of 28..

Yes, I do see what our fellow man can do and is still doing to others..That is why I am honored, to be a believer in Christ now..

As for being brainwashed..Not Me..I am Heartwashed.. :)

In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)

ADDITIONAL: Hello Ferret.. :)

If Loving Everyone and not judging others is being an idiot..then Yes, I guess I am..

All evidence is evaluated based on an assumption of some sort. I learned this in graduate school at a major secular university.... in a cell biology class..... while evaluating peer reviewed research. We were instructed to circle every time the author based a conclusion on an assumption and we were challenged to evaluate the assuptions before evaluating the conclusion. So I guess my question is... how can any group of people not see that an assumption is necessary to evaluate any piece of evidence? Scientists know this and so do theologians. I guess I don't really see your point.

I myself being a Christian know what you are talking about, but it gives people a warm feeling inside to believe in God because it makes you a good person, which is the biggest load of rubbish I've ever heard but so. All religions act as if they are perfect but really they're not, one great big flaw people fail to notice in Christianity is the fact that they are sexist. Why is a woman not allowed to be a priest and why is it not possible for God to be a woman. If you go further you'll notice that Jesus is portrayed as white which is virtually impossible because he was born in the middle east. I'm hoping people will take you're point into consideration because you are right.

Actually, your assumptions about Christianity are wrong.

A Christian does not assume that there is a God, a Christian has FAITH in God.

There is a big difference between assumption and faith just as there is a big difference between theory and fact.

Just because we cannot see it does not mean it doesn't exist. We cannot see the wind, but I know it is there by its effect. I cannot see my memories or thoughts but I know they exist. It is the same with God, I cannot see Him but I can see his effects in the world around us.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the EVIDENCE of things not seen." Hebrews 11: 1

I'd just like to point out that the definition you just gave for "theory" is the semantic definition of a theory. It is *VERY* different from the scientific definition of a theory, which is not an assumption but a model to explain a set of facts. A scientific theory is an explanation for a set of facts, and not something less true than a fact.

In their circles they call assumptions "faith." Faith to a believer is like evidence to a skeptic. It's hard to imagine but in my experience with them this is exactly what's going on. If one is not interested in searching for truth, but rather "finding" truth, faith is the easy road to what they seek. Those of us who are more skeptical require much more to be fulfilled.

In short, believers are content with holding assumptions as truth while skeptics are more interested in searching for real truth.

You say I am being controlled, but I say I have chosen to lead the life I live. To accept that I will never be perfect, and that I need help to make my way. My fellow man has nothing to do with my desire to please God. I also don't think that assumation is a real word....
