Yes, people in the bible have sinned. That is because they were human. ( Read Rom. 3:23) What kind of inspiration would a Bible hero be if he or she were perfectly sinless. These things happened to show us that they were fallible and human just like us. Everyone is a candidate for God's grace and forgiveness.

Yes, of course it's violent. There are different parts to the Bible, such as history and record-keeping, poetry, prophecy, etc.
We couldn't tell the story of America without mentioning the bad things such as how we stole the land from the Indians or how we enslaved the Africans and dragged them here to build our country for us. But yet some of America's values are very good, such as the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
So the Bible tells the good and bad times in the history of Israel and that includes wars and even (almost) unspeakable brutality.
The only way to decide is to read all of it including the good and bad then pray or meditate for guidance. Maybe you will be inspired by the life of Jesus and his message of peace and brotherhood. Jesus didn't believe in war, even when Peter tried to defend Him from the soldiers who were going to arrest Him, Jesus said "put away your sword; those who live by the sword will die by it"
I've been struggling with the same questions you have and while many people think that the Bible is all one book written by God himself and that every word in it is equally sacred, I actually believe the Bible is a collection of many books by different authors, spanning several thousand years. Yes it contains some of the world's greatest wisdom and knowledge, but you can't just build your life around every word in it, you have to use your wisdom and God's help to figure out which parts to live by.

Personally, I think it's more obsolete than violent.
The OT rules may have been applicable, or even necessary, in ancient times, but have little or no meaning now.
The NT details the teachings of Christ. However, most of his thoughts about how best to live, and suggested practices can be found in most other religions and many philosophies of the world.
A personal note; I refuse to intentionally hurt another human being. Can the bible say that? OK - maybe it is violent after all!

I am a non-christian and I think the Bible teaches some very important values in life. It just depends what you read and how you interpret it. If you take every word of the Bible literally you'll have a very hard life. But if you use it as a guide line instead of a map, then you will be better off. At least that's what I think.

War has been and always will be a constant. There's no avoiding it. The Bible is an account of what really happened way back when so why would you think there wouldn't be war? It makes sense when look at the history of it.

Recall that part of Exodus, right before Moses goes to the Pharaoh. He hears a voice that tells him to demand that the Children of Israel be set free. "Which God should I say sent me?" asks Moses.
The answer, in the original Hebrew was Yahweh. In the Hebrew of the day, that's actually a verb. It means simply, "to be."
When people stuck with "to be" instead of adding concepts to what the "being" is, everyone went free. There was no more slavery - for a time.
Then people thought they knew everything - again! They came up with "brilliant" philosophy. You can read some of that IN THE BIBLE where it says things like "be kind to your slaves."
Hey, I know. Let's just stick with "to be" and quit trying to be geniuses.

While there is alot of violence in the Bible, theres quite a lot of love as well. In fact, when you think about it, its truly a blessing in disguise that the violence is shown there. It shows that God leaves nothing out in His word. What I mean is, he didnt sugar coat the verses in the Bible. He tells the truth, and shows how mankind should learn from the mistakes its made in its journey thus far.
I follow Christ. He preached of Love and forgiveness, and once he made the new covenant with man, isn't it quite a coincidence that the wars, killing, and wrath of God subsided. (That is till the Tribulation starts, and after that, if you've rejected Christ, its on like donkey kong)

Well, read the whole thing first. Anything can sound bad if you only read bits and pieces of it.
But you are right. The bible is full of violence, lies, murder, theft....even Jesus uses violence to get his point across. I absolutely don't think it is a good basis for anyone's life.
I can't help but notice how many other answerers ignore the fact that GOD is responsible for most of the violence in the bible. He told his followers to go out and kill in his name or went out and did it himself. If he hadn't been there egging his followers on, a lot fewer people would have died.

No, not at all. I think that the whole bible points to Jesus as the savior of all, which is a true demonstration of love. yes their are violent parts to the bible with war and the like, but that is just showing the promises of God. You can not pick and choose what you want from the bible. you either accept the whole thing, or none of it.

No.
Matthew , Mark, Luke, and John tell the story of the Bible. And the Truth.
If you choose to read and elaborate on only the wars, I feel so sorry for you.
Because there is SOOOO much love in the Bible.
