I was raised pentecostal by two caribean parents.
I get conflicting messages, one which says I can be anything I want once I get out of college but another that says
I have a certain path to follow anyways.

they seem to get upset when I dont follow this "predetermined" path. I cant bear to see myself ending up like so many people in my church, old and redundant. I'm 20 and soo I will have to soar.

I want so bad to leave my church and find a new one. I hate being so well know.

any advice?

my dreams include leaving this place to start a rock and and touring.
Then later use my degree in finance to help disadvantaged families coordinate bills and
If I ever become famous, I would like to use my money and influence to coordinate serious efforts on behalf of children who cant read.

yes everything that goes through my head is lofty, with most of it being left up to chance, but I still dream.

Just because you go to church doesn't make you a Christian. You can leave anytime you want if you've never believed in Jesus, there really is no point in going actually.

The pentecostal's are "weird", speaking in tongues and what not. If you'd like to find a church that preaches the real word of God, go find a southern baptist church.

Maybe you have found your "predetermined" path and your parents are wrong.......

Pray and meditate about it.

You should respect your father and mother, but you still have to be your own person. At the age of 20, you should start making your own decisions, your parents have to keep faith that you will do the right things.

You sound like a very good and wise 20 year old.

One word of advise: Print off that paragraph about your current dreams and make sure to read it at least once per year.

The cold hard world can make us also cold and hard if we are not careful.

Good Luck and God Bless you and your family.

Peace!

There is no reason why you can't do ALL of that. Just remember that Christianity is NOT the same as being religious. I'm actually surprised that as a Pentecostal, you don't already understand this. As long as you have a personal relationship with Jesus, you can be in ANY Christian religion. Your actions as described above are those of a Christian. Go for it!

Well, there are some pretty successful christian rock bands. Try that if you really want to stay within the limits of christianity.
But why limit yourself? Strike out on your own and be the person you truly want to be. Don't let people put you down and criticize you because you don't meet their expectations. I grew up like that, too. I am so happy I found my way to freedom and don't have to live within the limits and bigotry of christianity anymore. Good luck.

Those sound like very noble and honest dreams. This predetermined path your parents speak of, who was it predetermined by? If it were predetermined by God, how would they know? Surely God would choose to tell you what your path was before your parents. I think they have set goals for you in their own minds that they wish for you to acheive and this is the predetermined path they want you to follow. In order to be happy, you have to do what makes you happy. You cannot live your life trying to please other people, even if those people are your parents. They should be happy just to see you happy, no matter what.

You said you are 20.... are you still at home? Can you go off to college?

It sounds like you are just eager to get out on your own. Then you can choose the church and the lifestyle you want for yourself.

What's keeping you from doing that?

Keep dreaming, you may be dreaming for things God has put in your heart. Stick with him, even if you don't stay at the same church. Your dreams may be more than your parents can understand, but if God's behind your dreams don't let that slow you down.

You are at the point where your heart is what you must follow. Your parents have raised you, and raised you well, but they cannot determine your future for you.

This is not so much a matter of religion, but of discernment and maturing. Take the time, and allow yourself the experiences, to grow in faith and to grow in belief in yourself and in your abilities and in your calling.

You got to be you.
You might want to get a stable job, before starting a band.
It's really hard to make it big as a rock star.
