Hey pinkisal...,

Your question takes time to answer completely. I found these web sites do a pretty good job of telling about surnames, family names, and last names from all over the world. That includes patterns, etc. The first one should answer your question.

Surnames in the west are actually a fairly recent phenomenon. We did quite well with the system that they still use in Iceland, as an example, in which old whats-his-name has children whose last names are whats-his-names-son and whats-his-names-dottir. In the east, family names are more firmly entrenched, and more important, so they generally come first rather than last. But still, there are those who don't want to have them (Cher and Ronaldinho come to mind), and I don't see why we shouldn't humor them.

Cultures vary. And that's the truth.

Western cultures, and others, use surnames. Some eastern cultures place family name (surname) first. Some cultures use no surnames at all. That's the way it is.
