Excellent. Instead of the typical meaningless of telling people to ask Jesus, who died 2,000 years ago (sorry to say this for those who didn't realize it), you would have us ask Napolean and Hitler, who died much, much more recently.

Hahaha. Ask Hitler? Well you are a piece of work aintcha? His efforts for one race of catholic perfect people had nothing to do with war? Too bad you never had a chance to talk with any of the 6 million exterminated Jews. Read Mein Kamph then come back on that one. You should also know at the present time 4/2/07, there are 33 major conflicts occurring on this planet. Each and every one due to a conflict of religious beliefs. No one ever said that some religions don't do wonderful things. They are however, responsible for better than 95% of all wars. No one ever wants to hear it but it is true. Only the very naive can't accept it. The Catholics, Muslims, Protestants and the many branches thereof.

Well since the Holocaust picked out people by religion it clearly was religiously motivated. Hitler was quite willing to pick and choose his beliefs, but he was mainly Catholic and that was what caused him to pick out the Jews.

I acknowledge that a lot of good is done in the name of religion. I just don't see it as making up for the bad. I also don't think that all war is religiously motivated, but there is usually a component of it that is. And it would be one less big silly thing to fight about.

You have a valid point. Well, let's see, whether I can head to speak right here...

Because voilence usually comes from intolerance, racism and hatred. Especially when the people are told to not think logically and believe what is said (think of the terrorists). Religions are the most common factors today.

And you're right, there were/are wars also fought for wealth and basic sense of security (the only other major reasons I can think of) but religions seem to be even more stupid reason to be cause of the fight.

Like...
oh, i was trying to steal that million dollars, he tried to stop me. and i killed him

verus
i was saying jesus and he was saying allah (reverse the order if you want to read it that way). and i killed him

And also religions just speak so loudly about how they are nice but they are the only one nice and so much annoying things like that, which when becomes a reason for violence, gets their names in the front page.

So,, a knife can cut onions and can kill. I'll blame the knife when it kills, even if it cuts onions sometime.

I don't blame religion for violence. Not even Islam for any violence some of it's followers participate in.

However, to those who say Hitler was a perfect example of Christian violence, that's a lie. He is about as Christian as Fred Phelps. Just because someone is brought up a Christian doesn't mean they remain one, and his war on the Jews had nothing to do with the teachings of the bible!

Perhaps you have a point, but then again, isn't religion just another way that historically those in power have used to divide, exploit, rule and oppress?

I'm not saying it is religion itself that is wrong, merely the way it is used to seperate people into different groups and create an "us and them" mentality, that ends with the afore mentioned violence.

So, in answer to your question, No, religion isnt violent, not by itself... religion is just a sentiment and colleciton of faiths and beliefs, they are not capable of doing anyhting because they do not DO anything.

People on the other hand DO do things and ARE violent, and they use religion, along with race, gender, colour, sexuality etc as a tool and justification, even to themselves, for doing so. It's just another way to make someone you don;t know your enemy, which makes it a lot easier to kill, exploit, rule and dehumanise them

I am an atheist and I think anyone who decides they hate someone before they've even met them and come to know them is an idiot. There are lots of good reasons to hate someone, but the social, cultural and religious groups they find themselves in is not one of them.

Religion is not to blame its the people themselves! i totaly agree with what this person says!!

it is not the religion that is violent OHH NO, its the people who take it to far (maybe we could call them religious terroists!) but they believe that their religion is the only religion and all the other religions are a load of rubbish and personally if i were in charge i would say that they should be thrown out!!:)

intercourse and leisure are functionally appropriate. issues like respiration that are accomplished immediately are no longer generally gratifying. the place we've a call approximately mandatory purposes (intercourse, eating and so forth.) exhilaration is in touch as an incentive to pass on living or reproduce. faith and violence are no longer appropriate the comparable way. faith isn't an ever-recent organic incentive like exhilaration, regardless of the shown fact that it could of direction (the place it exists) be a reason. placed yet in a different way, intercourse is basically approximately consistently observed with the help of leisure: violence isn't linked as heavily to faith. The separate question raised in one answer - is violence mandatory? - would desire to basically be spoke back with the help of the writer (if any) of the universe. He on my own will understand whether there's a workable option way of establishing existence. What we are able to with basically slightly success assert is that interior the international as that's, violence is an inevitable component of each and every existence. each and every thing that lives would desire to kill to attain this; even the timber interior the wooded area compete lethally for gentle and area. We would desire to kill to consume. micro organism do their terrific to kill and consume us - etc. considering the fact that, as rational beings, we are able to (and actual would desire to) pick whether and whilst to apply stress, it follows that there will be an component of leisure interior the workout of violence. adventure bears this out. the great following for violent activities, the fascination with conflict and the recurring entertainment struggling with between youthful men and boys are basic phenomena. different animals may well be comparable. Tomcats combat like boys play footy - partly for relaxing, partly to verify dominance. Aggression is mandatory - a passive animal is readily an ex-animal in somebody's abdomen. All animals, whether, (and enormously complicated rational ones like us) set up limits. Cats and canine do no longer in many situations combat to the loss of existence. We play rugby, hunt, container and so forth. as techniques of channelling the impulse extra or much less harmlessly. we are able to even convince ourselves that we are no longer violent and hate the assumption. All of human historical past proves the different.

I think our history has already answered this on numerous occasions, such as the burning of witches, the torture used on heretics, and the wars fought in the name of religion.

That being said religion makes a convenient flag for anyone to justify their aggression
