There are alot of places that you must visit. Those places are Dylans Candy Bar (an awesome resteraunt that sells all sorts of candy, ice cream, sweets etc), central park, statue of liberty, broadway ot see a play(like the lion king), museums (natural history museum), 5th avenue(there are some places, like build a bear, american girl dol and its near rockafellar center), rockalfellar center, chinatown, little italy (for souveniers for the last two). You can go to the village,(Greenvich), empire state building and thats pretty much it. I meanif you're with your daughter all the time. Have fun.

I live in north jersey but the city is 10 min from my house.
Time square is by far a must see! Especially at night because you get the full effect of the bright lights. The things I will tell you to see is age appropriate for a 5 yr. old.
http://www.madame-tussauds.com/ is a def. must see especially if your not from a major city area. It's a wax museum full of celeb's and political figures. Adult admission will I think run you $25 (don't know for kids, prob.$15 or less, could be free). I think if you have a AAA membership there are discounts. Borrow someone's if you can if you don't have one. They just want to know you have a memebership card as of last time I went there. (keep in mind all in time square). If you need to catch dinner Planet Hollywood has a great atmosphere. (celeb. clothes and props are displayed all over the place). You can stop by the HUGE Toy's R Us too. Your child will love the big ferris wheel inside.
2 other great places to eat that's not to far is Mars 2112. it's fun for kids because when you enter you get a simulated ride to another planet to eat dinner. (decorated with a cavernous feel to it). The other is the Jekyll & Hyde Club. Now I don't know if your child gets easily affraid of things so I will forwarn you it may be a spooky atmosphere for some kids but children are so diffrent from when I was a kid that nothing phases them now . I LOOOVVVE this resturant. Just look it up on the internet you'll see what I mean. (don't get me wrong I do see kids in the resturant a lot but every parent is different). There are 2 locations. I like the one closer to the village but there is one that is by Time Square where all the tourists go.
In the morning you can always go to Central Park for a nice walk. (too bad you couldn't go later in spring because it truly is a sight with all the flowering trees). Or you can take a carriage ride if your child likes horses.
Near by across the street from the park is the world renouned Natural History Museum. As a kid I LOVED that place. It's educational and fun! Souvenirs can be found all throughout the city. just be weary of the street vendors. Sometimes they're a little pushy (like the lotion stand or cell phone people in the mall) I hope I helped some and I hope you enjoy your stay!

I love this question! Well, basically because tourists usually have no idea what they are doing. But you have thought ahead!

If you want to be "touristy" check out places like Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, the Stock Exchange, etc. There are usually good events at the south street seaport as well.

I grew up in Battery Park City, a few blocks from the world trade center. If you have some down time and just want to walk around, go down to the Esplanade, a sort of boardwalk, in battery park. It is a very relaxing place, and you can then visit the World Financial Center, although you may pass ground zero, which isn't exactly kid friendly.

Have fun!

Hi there, where to begin, there are so many places in NY you can visit let's start with kid friendly. There is the Bronx zoo, the New York aquarium, the botanical gardens, Go city kids, central park and so on. If you like any of these research them before going to see what kind of activities they have. I hope this info helps out, I'm not very familiar with best places to buy souvenirs, but there are great restaurants all over town such as BJ's, Benihana, Mr.Chows and kid-ville restaurants. Depending on where you're going look it up in the web for your nearest location. I hope I was of help. Take care and enjoy your trip to the city.

i went to new york last year and it was so much fun. i still didn't get to see everything, but places you must see could be:

empire state building--going there at nighttime or to watch the sun set will be beautiful (hope your daughter enjoys watching the sun set and doesn't mind the height--86 stories i believe) there is also a really good souvenir store where you can buy empire state building things, calendars, etc. and you can press coins into designs

times square--the bright lights and flashy billboards are just awesome. you can take pictures of anything and everything around you. just make sure you hold on to your daughter--there's a million people that walk there every single minute of every day

macy's--i believe it's 9 floors with a 1 and a half floor for visitors so they can get their 11% off purchases. there's somethign for everyone at macy's, it's unbelievable.

statue of liberty/ellis island--ellis island was a bit boring for me but it could be interesting if you wanna know about history and whatnot. statue of liberty is really cool. it's nice to be up close to the statue of liberty and taking pictures of it.

those would be the main one. there's a billion more things to see there. i'll just say you won't be able to cram everything in into 5 days but try your best. :)

have fun!!!

Here are the must go to places, especially child friendly for your 5 year old:

Toys r Us - 44th street and Broadway: There is a ferris wheel in the store.

M and M's world: 49th street and Broadway. Its a store all about M and M's.

Madame Toussand's Wax Muesuem - on 42nd street between 7th and 8th avenues

FAO Schwartz - 58th street and 5th ave. You can do the big piano on the floor routine, the way Tom Hanks did in the movie "big"

Central Park Zoo - by 63rd street and 5th - go in the 59th street entrance. You can either see the sea lions during feeding time or go to the petting zoo

Restaurants:
Mars 2112: Futuristic and fun on 51st street and 7th avenue

There are also the Olive Garden (on 48th and Broadway), TGIFridays on 47th and Broadway and Applebee's on 42nd street between 7th and 8th avenues

There are souvenirs stores all over Times Square. Toys R Us also have souvenirs.

There is, or used to be, a really great souvenir shop in the Empire State Building. And, you definitely should go there, anyway. I don't know how your daughter would feel about Tiffany's, but with your screen name, you defnitely should go there. (On Fifth Avenue at about 57th (?) Street).
I've always heard about a place called Serendipity 3 on E. 60th Street. It's famous for frozen hot chocolate and would be kid-friendly. However, I've never been there, don't know if it gets very crowded or if it's expensive.
