Most religions don't feel the need to treat their devotees like naughty little children and keep them in line with threats of grave punishment.

In comparative religion, a place of eternal punishment makes sense in some systemic theologies, but not in others.

And not all hells are created equal. Hellenists looked to a Hades which was a place of general misery but not exactly suffering in the same vein as Gehenna, Sheol or Hell as Christians understand it. Likewise, Heaven is not equivalent to the Elyssian Fields, and is a far cry from Nirvana (not a place so much as a state of nonexistence).

Hell makes sense in a covenant theology when the covenant is broken and not restored. Hell does not make sense in a catch-all theology or atheology (ie, bad people go to heaven too but eat lousy food and have to walk everywhere while good people drive cars and eat steak).

The concept of a place of eternal punishment is unique to religions that contain a compunction to convert. It is purely a scare tactic.

Religions that do not desire or require universal conversion do not have eternal punishment concepts. Even in those that have 'hells', these are temporary conditions, not eternal.

Who wants to believe in a place of eternal torment? People believe and accept what makes them comfortable.

Because religions are different. It's like asking why only a few religions have Jesus or only a few religions have Valhalla.

because the religions themselves were so lame-@$$ to begin with, they needed a Fear Factor to get people to join up. nothing else about he cult made it worthwhile (like the christian cult).
