Daughter getting married next year to a young man that she has been living with. We have offered her $16,000 towards wedding. Does this seem like a fair amount?

WOW!! Depending on where they're having the wedding, they could pay for the whole thing (and probably have a good chunk left over) if they budget carefully and spend wisely.

That is a MORE than generous amount of money - your daughter is a lucky girl!!

I have to give the expensive amount here. THe average wedding in our area costs around 25,000. HOWEVER that does include the engagement ring, and the things that the grooms family are traditionally responsible for buying. So yes I'd say 16,000 is very reasonable.

And I applaud you for your approach. My dad didn't want to be bled dry knowing exactly how much the caterer costs, the photographer, etc. He knew it would lower his enjoyment of the day. So he gave me a budget of 10,000 for the wedding and we did the budgeting and the negotiating. The deal was I had 10,000 for my wedding. I could decide to have a Justice of the Peace marry us in a backyard with some BBQ and probably have 9,000 spending money to start our life with. Or I could have a 30,000 gorgeous wedding with a celebrity photographer and a catered seafood meal for all--if my groom and I had the additional 20,000 that we cared to spend. It was all up to us. I believe I came up very close to my limit and my dad was able to enjoy the day since he didn't have to write checks every week leading up to it.

All that being said, if you live in a very expensive city like LA, San Diego, NYC, or Chicago--she is going to struggle with that amount. But even so, you are not obligated to give more than your means. She can have a very beautiful wedding--if she is the practical sort who doesn't need Vera Wang custom dresses. Either way, if she can't budget yet it should teach her the value of it.

I think more dads should just give their daughters the amount and let them plan what they will--more expense or less--depending on what is important to them. Enjoy the day!

Depending on what type wedding they want $16,000 is a generous contribution. The average cost of a wedding in the US is about $27,000.00 so they are going to have to really work it.

If they visit http://www.wedding-savings-for-bride-groom.com they will find plenty of information on where to go and ways to save and still have a fun wedding.

Totally! I am getting married next year and my parents can only afford $3000! And the same with my fiance's parents! We were lucky enough to score a reception site with everything included, including open bar for 5 hours for under $7000.....everything else, my fiance and I have to bust our butts with extra jobs to pay for what we want.

I wish I were lucky like your daughter...it would make life so much easier!

I hope that she appreciates what you are giving her....If she doesn't think that's enough and wants more money - well...that is just being selfish and ungrateful!

That sounds very nice to me. You can always go on-line & look up wedding etiquette & see what the brides parents "responsibilities" are. Then once your daughter knows what she wants & gets some prices you can figure out what your $$ is going to cover. If his parents are going to do their part, it should all work out. A lot of bride & grooms don't have anyone to hand them that kind of money so I think it's great! Good luck!

I would be she can plan an amazing wedding with that amount and have plenty left over (depending slightly on where you live) because I know I could. And if she can't maybe her fiance should be controlling the finances. May God Bless their marriage.

More than fair. That would have paid for 3 weddings in my family!

I'd take that in a second! Can you be my parents!

They can have an amazing wedding at that price.

I'm planning my wedding for about $10 K.

You have a very lucky daughter.

That is more than generous. My husband and I got married in January and did the whole thing for under $2,000. It can be done and still look great. You just have to be creative.
