I cannot tell him anything, can I? Wouldn't be polite. But then he is also not polite: either he doesn't wash his clothes, or himself, or his teeth, or all. I feel sick when i am in the same office with him, and I must do it when we have meetings, and this all the time! I feel trapped!

I have a student like this. This man is so nice though and somewhat handicapped. It is a difficult situation especially when you get nauseated every time you get near them. In your situation, I would say that the immediate supervisor should talk to the person in private. As far as not being polite, I think it isn't polite in not telling the person. Some people are just not aware of the smell just like smokers are oblivious to the odor that is left on them from smoking.
Talk to your supervisor and if your supervisor doesn't want to take on this challenge (which is part of their job) then take it upon yourself to do. Be polite though. It isn't healthy for them anymore than it is for fellow co-workers.

Some people just don't care. They know they stink so leaving stuff around won't work. Get with Human Services. I once worked in a office where my co-worker would give off gas and think that was the funniest thing. It was hard for me because we were in a group of people looking at some stuff kinda discussing things and then I was hit with SBD You know silent but deadly. I just started laughing uncontrollably as a few others did two. I just couldn't help it! The manager had a talk with him and stopped him from doing it.

I used to work with someone who just stunk up the whole place, his roomate weighed over 600 lbs and their upstairs toilet clogged a year before I met him, the number 2 was actually still kind of floating in it. I never walked in their house again after that first time. But what did we do, we were cruel to him, yeah so. We wouldn't pick on him like school children would, but if he walked up to us to talk, we would do something like hold our nose as we walked away. If he followed we would bluntly say dude you stink get away from me. He eventually started showering. You could tell because at first he would just always stink, but by the end, we would actually see him with wet hair, and little smell. Over time his smell faded, except when he sweated. He just needed someone to let him know how disgusting he was being. So we let him know and he changed. Your guy may not change but the blunt truth is what he needs.

You really have to have your supervisor take him aside and let him know that he needs to practice better methods of hygiene. It may be something that is a medical problem, but can be taken care of with the appropriate care. We had someone like this in our office, and our supervisor did have to take her aside and talk to her. It got better for a while, but she kept letting her grooming habits slide and our boss had to talk to her every couple of months. Fortunately, she got moved out of my group at one point and I didn't have to deal with it anymore, but this is a very real problem. You have a right ot have a work environment that does not make you sick and your boss has an obligation to make this happen,.

he actually, by law, has to take care of his odor if it's affecting work environment. tell HR, and if they don't do anything i believe OSHA will.
i once worked w/ a dude w/ really bad BO and i left a stick of deodorant on his car. he still didn't get the msg so the manager said something after complaints!

Pretend you are having a regular conversation mention "Oh have you heard of this new deodorant called XXX...or oh, I just love these breath mints"...if that doesn't work mention it to the boss

i'd say leave him a sticky note when he's gone on his desk, start a myspace group about him and invite your co-workers, or just give him a back full of grooming goodies.

You need to speak to your boss. He/She needs to handle this. I have had to go through this with people at work before. A woman I used to work with had a problem with her bladder and had to use the bag (I forget what those are...for bowels it is a colostomy bag), and her's leaked and customers constantly complained to me so I had to pass it along to my boss.

You could pass it along to human resources. They are trained for these types of situations.
