Depends on the age of the child, but yes, a smack with the palm of the hand either on the hand or bum does not do any harm.
Whilst I agree reasoning and explaining to children without smacking is good in theory, I think that most children take being naughty too far and a smack sometimes is the best method of discipline. After a few smacks a child should respond to the 'threat', and smacking should not be necessary. Taking away privileges is also a good deterrant, but it's no good threatening to take away privileges if you don't carry them out, if necessary.
Unfortunately, smacking in public can be frowned upon by anti-smacking people. I think it depends on the circumstances as to whether you decide to smack in public. It can be embarrassing for some. But it can be more embarrassing when the child plays up and gets away with it.

A one time smack is just fine, on the bum, or on the hand if there is danger. After reading the others, they must not have children. Kids do act up, testing how far they can go and where their limits are. We are the adults and parents and are to teach our children right from wrong. A 2 year old does not understand "taking away tv" or "playstation". The question goes further then just to smack or not----and what do we fear. Fear is a good thing, it keeps most of us OUT OF TROUBLE. Why do adults not speed, because we are afraid of getting a speeding ticket--which hurts us in our wallet and pride. Why do adults not act up at work, because we are afraid of being fired. Why do adults not steal, because we are afraid of jail. Teaching a child the right way is a good thing, and if they know that if they act up, that they may get a smack, then they have learned correct behavior. Smacking generally does not hurt much, but a child does learn. Gently talking to a child when they do wrong at a very early age does not work on most, and the child will become the authority in the house. The parents need to stay the authority, the child will become a parent someday and will have the authority then.

A smack on the bum or hand yes. I would not use anything other than my hand and I've never had to smack my child in public she's pretty well behaved when we're out.

Smack- never
not on the hand, bum, anything!
If you are the smacking type, do not use anything other than your hand, it may be hard to judge how forceful you are actually being.
And in public is disrespectful, and you are likely to get an earful if you do so.

Tap on the hand or bottom is acceptable.. I do try other alternatives with my 2 kids,
They lose playstation, tv privileges sometimes pocket money, my kids are 5 and 7.
I would never use an object to administer punishment some of the stuff I went through as a kid bordered on abuse

My mum was a school teacher from the end of the war until retiring in the eighties. She used to teach infants, 5 to 7 year olds. On the very rare occasions that a smack was required she used to smack the back of the legs below the knee. This always did the job and didn't cause any ill effects.

A smack on the hand is appropriate and so is a swat on the bottom ! Nothing else besides your hand should be used and depending on what was done, if they misbehave in public, they need discipline then and there, NOT "wait until I get you home".

Nice to see non p.c. answers heartily agree nothing wrong in a smack on the bum short sharp and instant. can't stand all these mums who try to reason with their mis behaving children.Fed up with hearing Mums saying they wont love them if they don't behave.A smack is the answer and perhaps children would learn that they have to conform like the rest of us. Most of the teenagers in our society today have grown up with the No Smacking policy and God help us Most of them seem to have no respect for people or their property .Where has the self discipline gone they believe because they have never been properly disciplined that they can do as they like.

yes. on hand when over 18 months and try to touch all the stuff you think is dangerous, nothing else.

on the bum (fully clothed, don't take down the pants, thats demeaning) when older and are being very naughty.
you have to do it out side if you do it at home or they will learn they can get away with more when not in the house.
NEVER make them wait, kids have short memories, and will forget why they are being punished. NEVER say wait till you rdad gets home, you will demonise him. you are both in charge of disapline.

NEVER USE ANYTHING BUT YOUR HAND.ONLY SLAP ONCE(NO MORE) AND MAKE SURE THEY KNOW WHY THEY ARE IN TROUBLE BEFORE AND AFTER.
