I agree that you are safer on a plane than in your car on the drive to the airport. I always tell my passengers when they ask if the plane is safe that I wouldn't be on here if it wasn't. After all, I have two young sons and a wife to go home to.

Consider this: Even on September 11, 2001 when four planes were hijacked that was only FOUR out of HUNDREDS of commercial flights that were in the air over the US at that moment. Since then things have only gotten safer. Is there a chance that a terrorist act, mechanical failure or pilot error will put you in danger? Yes, there is always a chance. There is also a CHANCE that an anvil will fall on your head someday, but the odds are pretty long. The same is true of your being involved in a hijacking or crash. There are THOUSANDS of safe flights every day! Odds are you will always be safe. And it's for sure that it's safer than driving!

There are a million and one ways to meet your end, but there is only one that will get you. Statistically, you are more likely to run into grief in your car within 8 miles of your home. If you absolutely cannot find any way to be comfortable in an air plane, find another mode of transport. Consider though that flying a trip that is say 1000miles, that trip might take three hours in an airliner, probably less. In a car, you are looking at 15.5 hours (assuming the road miles are the same for this argument) If you have to drive in traffic such as is found around LA , say for an hour of that time, you are exposed to roughly 10560 vehicles, ( 1 vehicle in every 30 feet for 60 miles) each one which is a potential threat to your life, that isn't even considering the shape of the road, weather, condition of your car, condition of your health, distractions or random acts of violence. The point I'm trying to make is that all forms of travel have their risks, so it is logical to assume that the less time you are exposed to those risks, the better your chances of getting to be old and crotchety like me.

Commercial aviation in the United States is something like 110 times safer than automobile travel. U.S. commercial aviation is among the safest forms of transportation anywhere. I have never understood why someone jumps into a car without worrying, but then they are a nervous wreck when flying in a commercial carrier.
To maximize your safety when flying, stick to U.S. commercial carriers, avoid commuters, avoid foreign carriers, and always fly non-stop or one-stop when possible. Most incidents occur on landing or take-off, so from purely a statistical point of view, the fewer landings or take-offs you experience in your lifetime the lower your probability of an incident. But again, you are many, many times safer on a U.S. commericial carrier than you are in a car.
Americans should be proud of the stiff regulation that results in the safest air transportation network in the world (based on incidents per mile traveled).

Yes, you are. The deaths per hour of travel is still quite a bit lower in airplanes than it is in cars. It may feel unsettling to have so many kilometers of air beneath you, but it's really harder for airplanes to crash than it looks like.

When the flight is over and you depart the airport in a car, your margin of safety goes in the toilet. The most dangerous part of any flight is the drive to and from the airport.

I can't answer whether YOU are safe.
But flying is safer than walking, bicycling, driving, smoking, drinking alcohol, eating trans fats, having a mate who gets on your nerves ....
But all the above kill you s.l.o.w.l.y.
