On this map it seems the one runway is unuseable. But the one parallel to it would be most likely the most widely used.

It does exist. The government declassified it's existence in 1998.

I know what a runway is used for and can only guess as to what they do at Area 51.

51 (officially known as Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3 and also known as Dreamland, Watertown Strip, Paradise Ranch, The Box, Groom Lake, Neverland, and other names) is a remote tract of land in the southwestern portion of Lincoln County in southern Nevada, located at 37.239° N 115.816° W, at the southern edge of a large dry salt flat called Groom Lake.

It lies within the Nevada Test and Training Range and is owned by the United States Department of Defense and the United States Air Force.

Area 51 contains an airfield whose primary purpose is believed to be the operation and analysis of enemy aircraft and weapons systems, and secret development and testing of new military aircraft.

Like most Airfields the Runways in use are dependent on winds. Given it's status as a test area the parallel runways would give a chase plane the opportunity to stay with it's charge throughout landing and takeoff.

The Runways are:

Paved

* 14L-32R
* 14R 32L
* 03R-21L
* 03L-21R

Sand

* 9L-27R
* 9R-27L

The sand runways are only used in the event of very high crosswinds or an emergency.

The runways in area 51 are used for testing very new, state of the art aircraft developed for the air force. My theory is that they develope those flying saucers and hovercraft in area 51, not this alian bogus.

32R-14L. It is one of 2 paved runways, and it is the shortest.
32L-14R is the longest, but it is closed. There appears to be an overrun are in the sand at the end of 32R about half the length of the paved area. There are 4 runways in the sand consisting of pairs. 03L-21R, 03R-21L. The other pair is 09L-27R, 09R-27L. Don't know how they accomplished marking sand runways, but these are clearly marked..
The runways are clearly visible on Google Earth and 32L-14R is Xed out, in other words, closed.

well depends shorter range aircraft may use the shortest runway that just runs up to the tarmac such as the 737-200's but test aircraft and such may use longer runways
