So that they may devote themselves completely to Christ.
Martin Luther, the founder of Protestantism, was the first to challenge that idea.Unlike the Catholics,Protestants believe that priests may have wives(and sleep with them)as God created humans to be in such relationships and thus come closer to God by experiencing human intimacy.

because they would lose priests.
as i is now the priesthood is the perfect place for a pedophile to hide out and not have people ask questions as to why they are in thier "50's" and not married yet.
if they were allowed to get married, it would be much better for the world and prevent pedophilia of altar boys. Since the catholic church refuses to change it's policies (a policy mind you that was not in any "scripture" but came about to rehab the image of the catholic church during the middle ages becasue the nuns and priests were screwing each other and priests were some of the biggest patrons of prostitutes and rumors of "wild orgies" among the clergy and that priests carried siphilis were rampant, so they forbade them from having sex) it can clearly be inferred that the catholic church SUPPORTS this type of behavior becasue it changed the rules to create this situaiton and now they refuse to change the rules to get rid of it.

Sex outside of marriage is sinful, so to take a vow of celebacy is a vow to not marry. Catholic priests do not marry because, while Christ does indeed approve of marriage for the Christian clergy, He much prefers that they do not marry. He made this quite clear when He praised the Apostles for giving up ``all'' to follow Him, saying, ``And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting.'' (Matt. 19:27-29). Also, Jesus explains why some do not marry, stating "some, because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingsom of heaven." The Apostle Paul explained why the unmarried state is preferable to the married state for the Christian clergy: ``He that is without a wife, is solicitous for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please God. But he that is with a wife, is solicitous for the things of the world, how he may please his wife: and he is divided.'' (1 Cor. 7:32-33). In other words, matrimony is good-- Christ made it one of the holy sacraments of His Church--but it is not conducive to that complete dedication which is incumbent upon those who submit themselves to another of Christ's holy sacraments--that of Holy Orders. Even so, the unmarried state of the Catholic priesthood is not an inflexible law--under certain conditions a priest may be dispensed from this law.
God bless,

It's pretty much only in RCC which follows the teaching of men/tradition and not the bible.
In fact, the bible says who and under what circumstances should the pastor, priest, preacher, overseer be in our Church's and their qualifications and they need to BE married! And have kids,
1 Tim 3:1-8
2Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 5(If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?)

For the reason posted, so that parishes (CATHOLIC ONLY) would not be considered estates to be passed on. Also, it is supposed to encourage the priest to be 100% dedicated to his church duties, a family would potentially distract: all of his parish are his children in essence.

If you are asking about the Roman Catholic priesthood, the canonical requirement of celibacy for priests in the Western Church is not forced upon anyone. In a proper sense, priests are men who freely choose celibacy "for the sake of the kingdom of heaven." After all, it is the vow or promise of celibacy that comes first, not ordination.
"Not all men can accept this precept, but only those to whom it is given. . . . There are those who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this let him receive it" (Matt. 19:11–12).
"Are you free from a wife? Do not seek marriage. . . those who marry will have worldly troubles, and I would spare you that. . . . The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to please the Lord; but the married man is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried woman or girl is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit; but the married woman is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please her husband" (7:27-34).

Priests are married to god.
To go shag up some mortal bird would be to commit adultery..... and the result of a cat-fight between some mortal bird and god would NOT be pretty.
