It depends on how long it takes your computer to boot up/shut down. If that cycle is 1 minute, then you should shut the computer off if you will be gone for more than 1 minute, or leave it running if back in a minute. The better option is to use the sleep function which save re-booting but drops power consumption to a minimum while gone. I use a laptop so i cycle it several times a day for travel. My desktop stays on if i anticipate using it anytime during the day and let it sleep between chores.

You know, my mom used to tell me when I was a kid that every time I turned the lights on or off, it costs an additional 25 cents. Now that I am older and much wiser, I am sure this was wrong. I think it is not nearly 25 cents.

The power used by the electronics of the pc is low, but that of the monitor is high.

However, switching on and off the monitor often may reduce its life, though it will save energy.

Turning off and on will use less power, but cost you in wasted time waiting for it to reboot. Why not use your energy saving settings to power down minimal power usage mode between useage.

Ahh, this was a mythbusters question. The answer is turning it off/on still uses much less power than leaving it on.
